Rolling Stock Storage Box

Last week while trying to carry 4 cars at once, and open a gate, I dropped two of my circus cars ( busted them both, but repairable). Big motivation to do something about getting the cars to the pike. With ideas from several LSC’ers that have gone before me and a couple of ideas of my own I spent some time building my rolling box to store and transport cars. Storage Box V1.0 Basic size is OD 24"W X 24"D X 48"T. I mounted 2 - 4" dolly wheels to the back bottom and 2 pivoting casters type to the front bottom.

I decided on 5 removable drawers with various spacing between them, to handle taller cars. And a door with storage shelves like a refrigerator.

Each drawer is completely removable with out any catches or limiting hooks, for ease of inserting and removing. We’ll see if this idea plays out as a good one or not.

All the drawers are interchangeable with each other, And the “glides” are such that a drawer won’t tip up or down until completely removed from the case. The size of the drawer lets me put ether 4 or 5 standard Bachmann cars across and another sideways in front for 4,5, or 6 cars per drawer.

I cut good size handles in the sides to carry the drawers with.

So far it has worked out well, I’ll cut some thin foam sheets up to put between the cars for protection from each other. I’m waiting on a couple of full extension drawer guides to put a “Breadboard” type pull out for a work surface between the 1st and 2nd drawers. Today a cote of primer, and Caboose Red paint. The Hardware of handles and hasps to close and lock it up comes last.

Very nice.
Nice collection of Circus cars.
Hollywood has a large collection of Circus cars too.

Nice, Dave. Necessity really IS the mother of invention!

Ah, an idea definitely worth pinching

That is a great looking box and it sure holds alot of trains. The door storage is a nice idea. Cool

Very nice! One thing though, you might want to watch out if the door is open, with locos in it, might it tip the cabinet over if you removed some of the shelves or their contents?

Thanks for the kind words Guys… I got the primer on, and didn’t have the heart to take a pic. Looked just like a 50’s kelvinator… I didn’t want cold storage for the good stuff. Got the Caboose Red on looks much better.

Mounted the hardware. Trunk clasps, and a hasp for the lock. Put two gate handles on for control and ease of rolling around.

I Think that a couple of faux windows on each side to make it look kinda like a caboose, and a nice big New Mexico Northern RR Logo will finnish the look.

Yea, I was kinda thinkin the same thing...................maybe one more dolly wheel on the door just to be on the safe side. And a logo on the side would definitely make it stand out.............(as if the red paint doesn't........;) )

@RAY , @KEN, Ether very acute perception, on your part, or the voice of experience! Ether way it’s something that I hadn’t thought thru. WOW the knowledge base on this board is simply amazing…

Thou there is engines in the door now, I hadn’t planed to keep them there. It was intended to be general running the train stuff. The bottom “Circus” engine is my new BBT 2-8-0 conversion, and it weights a ton, and I haven’t got around to making a carrier for it yet. BOX V2.0 was planned to be a “Engine” box, with receivers for engine carriers. But at this time there is no “Standard” that I have built my carriers to, so they are all different sizes ( LxWxH ). I think that 3 “Standards” of S M L sizes should be enough to handle most engines. Set a standard width and very the L and H. Then Partition the box with pigeon holes to receive each carrier. Your thoughts and experiences guys?

I think they are just using a practical application of Fudd's First Law of Opposition: If you push something hard enough, it will fall over.

Nice storage David.

I built something similar:

@GREG Your’s was one of the cabinets that I looked over and studied before tackling mine. Plus Bob’s “bread racks” usage. + several more.
