Mine is just a giant suitcase I made out of 1/2 plywood. Its long enough to fit a 40’ boxcar plus a caboose on one level and an engine on the other. It’s probably 2x3? Sides padded by foam. It’s not pretty but it works. I like this style because I can lay it flat. Down side is you can’t roll on/roll off.

I’m pretty sure mine don’t offer much protection. I built mine to allow me to easily move 4 at a time from storage to my layout, plus be able to stack them for storage. I did use them to transport to other layouts as well, but I didn’t find I needed protection so much as an easy way to transport them.

For Stock I would use a rubbermaid tote with foam …
