Rod and die chart

Hi Ya’ll,
I lost my chart (and my memory).
Can someone direct me to a rod to die chart.
Or, tell me the size rod I need for a 4:40 die?
I’m building anudder bridge for my layout, a through truss, and I need to make the supporting rods.

I believe this is an article in the Articles section of this site.

Hope this is what you want. Look at the bottom of the chart.

That’s it!
Thanks, Ric

John:

Just a suggestion, valued at what you pay for it.

As the chart shows, a 4-40 thread requires a rod diameter of 0.114". This is not a stock diameter. It will be very difficult to run a 4-40 die on the next larger stock size (1/8" or .125") without turning the ends down to the 0.114.

I use 3/32" (0.094") which is a standard off the shelf size, threaded with a 3-48 die, which is also off the shelf. Much easier than turning the ends of all those rods.

At 1:20 scale, 3/32"=~1 7/8", while 1/8"=~2 1/2".

Happy (Well Threaded) RRing,

Jerry

Jerry,
I can see that I can’t find .114 in the lengths I need.
Thanks for the tip!
I have a 2:56 die and a 4:40 die.
Never thot of a 3:48.

John:

2-65 thread requires a 0.086 diameter rod. Not a stock size. Micro-Mark carries 0.081" brass which is close enough for threading, but is a little small for 1:20 scale bridge hangers. It scales to something less than 1 5/8".

3/32" rod is a stock size, available in steel, aluminum and brass. I usually get the 24" long brass rods at the hobby shop.

3-48 dies are sometimes a little more difficult to find. They are available at specialty industrial tool stores, and from Micro-Mark and McMaster-Carr. McMaster has at least two grades of these dies. I also get my 3-48 hex nuts at McMaster.

Happy RRing,

Jerry
