Rockfishing

I have enough rocks to last a few lifetimes. You can rockfish all you want in my yard.

That is a very true a statement. I’ve seen his rock garden back in the woods where he grows them. Quite impressive

That may be so …however Shawn’s social security # is carved in plastic not in stone like

My father in law used to say : glad you don’t drive a tractor trailer!

Sean, I am not really sure what that means. But I used to drive one. And I am glad I don’t anymore

Every time my wife and I visited him she would fill my F-150 to the brim!

Ah, oh, ok. Now I understand.

Around here we don’t need a boat. We just harvest them out of the fields where they grow, after the farmers plow them up…

Ah, but that Ken is a different sport; Rockhunting!

And they can be elusive buggers, too…

You guys on the East Coast are weird. Everyone knows that the sport is rock picking.

Steve, I pick them from the roadside. But when I am looking for them in other places, its rock hunting. They will hide in brush, and tall grass. You have to be good to find them when they decide to camouflage themselves like that.

I’m tellin’ you guys - it doesn’t matter if you are Rockfishing or Rockhunting; the secret is the bait. You can pick any old rock from the side of the road, or a farmer’s field, but the really distinctive ones are illusive and need to be drawn out. The best way to draw them out is quality bait.

BTW, a friend tried Tofu Burgers and Bud Light. All he caught was concrete blocks.

OK, Jon, I gotta know. What kind of bait do you use for the keeper rocks? Do you ever use flies?

In another thread, Craig Townsend asked about my fishing technique for BFRs. Craig was interested in what I used for bait so I showed some photos from Quest For Rock and Rock Quest II. Cheeseburgers & Quality Beer…

Cheeseburgers and Microbrew!

Well I don’t know about rocks but put some grilled onions on those cheeseburgers and you’ll trap me!

I did this all the time when I had the Samurai and the Frontier. Could pile river rocks from construction sites into the beds. That alot harder with the Scion. I filled both yards with river rocks when we ripped the lawns out. Some were used on the short lived outdoor layouts zen rock garden theme.

My grandpappy tol me that only beginners used bait, especially meat bait for rock fishing. The true rock fisherman went flyfishing for his rocks. Yeah, it was a little harder, but much more satisfyin’

Remember sustainability requires that we ‘catch and release’… So you better make sure you don’t kill off a species by over fishing them! Jon, you better go put those 100#'s back in the lake!

Always had good luck using Pebbles, and rather than quiet, rock music seems to draw them out, especially the Stones. Then its “Bam Bam” and you got 'em.

After seeing the “potatoes” (a term learned from Al and Jon), the species is well established and needs to be harvested to protect from disease.

The devil in this technique is when you hook one. Man, do they fight!

The week before TrainOps we went out with some different bait; Ham & Cheese on Rye. Seemed to work well as I landed this monster. Just got it back from the boat today…

It was getting dark so the first and last picture are a bit fuzzy. The middle one was taken with flash…

This isn’t it’s permanent home, but I wanted to leave it close by 'cause it’s another heavy sucker!

Definitely keepers and well over the legal limit.
