Large Scale Central

Roaring Camp

Took the wife up to the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad in Felton up in the Santa Cruz Mountains yesterday. About an hour north of here from Seaside (Monterey Peninsula). Took some pics and am sharing a few of this interesting equipment for the railfans. They also run a standard gauge train to and from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. We plan on going and getting more pictures next chance we get.

Thanks Rudy.
Very cool.
Ralph

That place is another of those on my “To-Do” list.

Thanx for the pix!!

Nice shots Rudy. It’s been some time since I’ve been there.

For those that might not know…
Heisler number 2 and 3 truck Shay number 7 are both ex- Westside Lumber Co.

The “Dixiana” Shay in the first photo came from somewhere in the south. I forget the name of the RR. It’s been on the RC&BT since they were still building the line. That’s the engine that was “stolen” one night by a passerby (I knew the fellow). A couple of rifle shots stopped him. The owner was sleeping on the site and left the engine sitting with very low water. A little longer run and it probably would have blown up. I don’t think the total run of track was hardly a mile long at the time which made a getaway rather futile. The big circular trestle (burned later by arsonists) wasn’t even built yet.

Does anyone know if they ever got that disassembled Climax that was stored there up and running?

The run now is about two and a half miles long and the burned trestle is part of the tour. They now use a switch back method to get back to the station. About a little over an hour ride in open cars mostly. There is an old locomotive thats still sitting prestty much not put together in their industrial area.

It sounds like you used to live in the area. I’ve lived here most of my life and this is the first time we got up there to ride the train. Not surprising though as the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Blues Festival and other Festivals that people come here from far off to see is just a stones throw away from my house and we get to hear the music for free from the Monterey County Fairgrounds. Never went to one though. Just like the Leguna Seca Raceway thats world famous for all the various races there is just over the hill. Been there I think three times in my life. The Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Salinas Air Show add to the list of what I need to get a life and go and see  John Allen the guy that built the G&D H0 railroad built it right here on the peninsula in Monterey and I used to drool over his stuff in MR magazine when I was in Junior High and High School before and after I went into the navy. I never knew that he lived in Monterey and allowed visitors to his basement before he died and the place burned down until much later. I need to get out more :frowning: Some of you may not know who John Allen and the G&D are but a lot of us old timers do. Feel free to ask.

I like the look of that shay. One of the few i’ve seen that isn’t basic black. Where is this place? I’d like to visit it sometime.
Thanks for sharing!

Is this the original color scheme, or has this been “cuted up” for the tourist trade? In either case, it looks nice.

I’d say with 99.9 percent sureness that the original scheme was the basic get the job done black and this is the tourist trade version. Uh Oh. That must mean that I was a tourist yesterday :frowning:

Great pictures thanks
