Roadside America

A total loss to the hobby even if it’s O-27 (been there several times myself)…“No link” as you all have Google and know everything these days if you care…however it’s in Shartlesville, Pennsylvania. What you don’t have is what …never mind.

HUH??! Did I miss another post somewhere? Did they permanently close their doors? Did the building burn down?

Grew up in Palmyra, PA. Went there a lot as a child and in my early teens. Seem to remember that it had either GarGraves track or they put lots of extra ties under O gauge tubular track, but by eyeball the curves all looked wider than O-27. May have been a trolley that took that tight of a turn, but not much else. Think I had read somewhere that the buildings were originally built to look good with Standard Gauge trains, and the family had to switch to O when the big stuff was impossible to get.

Seriously, what happened? We don’t get news about that stuff down here in the wilds of Roanoke, VA.

Regards, David Meashey

Mr Meashey,

Yes it’s done! Damn shame as well. Perhaps some of the google experts can help with this post.

Here is one link:

https://www.pennlive.com/news/2020/11/pas-roadside-america-shutting-down-after-nearly-9-decades.html

I visited in 1995. My youngest was only 4 at the time, so I couldn’t spend as much time as I would have liked. Should have gone back one of the times I went to York.

It doesn’t take much Google Foo to find numerous articles. Google “roadside America closing”

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closure of Roadside America after 85 years of business. Nearly 3 years ago, we decided to place the display for sale, hoping to find a buyer who would continue business operations.

I was down in '01 and '04 for ECLSTS. And did not take in this attraction, probably since it did not pop up when I was searching for railway themed attractions. I presume it was open (almost) year round ?

After landing at HarrisburgInt’; '01 I went west to Altoona, '04 I popped up to Scranton and according to google maps when southbound I would have been close to Shartlesville on #78, but instead I went south past Allentown and Reading to Lancaster/Strasburg.

In the vid mention visitors take less than a couple hours, I would have likely been there for twice as long LoL

Another Utube vid with narration by the granddaughter;

Oh well ya don’t get to see everything in life

We visited that place a few times when I was a kid. Then headed over to Crystal Cave. Had my kids there in the 80’s.

Hmmm did you deliver your kids in the caves ? (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I was just @ Roadside America during this wonderful time… Closed … So never made it… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)
