Rio Grande Motorway Trucks

I’m in the process of repainting some 1/25 scale diecast trucks into Rio Grande Motorway colors for the G scale layout.

It took a while to disassemble and strip the factory paint off these trucks. And today I was finally able to get some paint on them.

Here’s what they look like after primer.

I’ll post more pics as I progress on these.

They look very, very good at this point in the process, Matt… Looking forward to see them painted… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Those are some cool looking trucks. Looking forward to what you will do with them.

A bit non-descriptive there. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)What color red? Someone will want to duplicate your efforts. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Rust-Oleum Sunrise Red 7762830 (Spray)

Rust-Oleum Automotive Primer Light Gray 2081830 (Spray)

Klean Strip Aircraft Paint Remover QAR343 (To remove the original paint from trucks…for use only on the metal parts)

Send the grumpy old man an invoice for your time and information Matt!

Thank you Matt

Yea, I have used an aircraft paint remover before on aluminum. I forget the brand, but its great for removing paint from nonferrous metals.

David,

Was it Turco?

I had to look. Its called Tal Strip.

Aluminum Paint:

Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Aluminum 7715830 (Spray)

Painting left to do includes black underframes, and some red details and touchups. As well as some hand painting details. And creating logo artwork. But getting there.

Looks good.

Looking for some advice on these.

For the black paint (underframes) should I use gloss black or flat black? I have spray for both.

The red and aluminum are obviously gloss. And with vehicles I tend to use gloss. But still debating about the black paint.

I’d use flat black, ain’t nothing shiny about the underside of a truck…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Yea, I would agree with flat black, dusted with some brown or something to simulate a little road grime. Even newer equipment has some dust and grime on the underside.

Glossy paints have had a harder, more durable, surface than flat paints. Truck chassis paint might have had a satin sheen at the time it left the assembly line; but likely about three minutes after the buyer started actually using the truck for what he spent his hard-earned money on it for …

Forrest, yes, the new trucks where I worked had gloss black frames and suspensions, but only the new ones.

Thanks for the ideas.

I picked up a can of Semi-Gloss black this morning at my local Ace. I think that will look best. Not super shiny, but then not ultra flat either. And if it doesn’t look good I can always repaint.

The real fun part will be when I hand paint the stake bed “wood” parts to look like unpainted wood (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)
