I am really really glad you decided to stick with the crane. It is fun to see how we are doing some things the same and how some things you have tackled a different way. And as always your modeling is an inspiration.

All the fiddley bits are about done, at least as done as they are going to get at this time. I will have to revisit this build with a tender car and other pieces but not during this build.

Rick, I’m interested to see the crane all rigged up. I have to agree with Jim on the painting. I know it will look great, but it’s gonna make it hard on us folks who will want to come back and steal ideas on the details. Gets better every time you post an update.
Hmm … the two brass ( coat hanger rods ) holding the wood brace ( in front of the spools) upright . I think should have turnbuckles .

Had some time the last couple days to concentrate on this project and I think I am going to come in on time and under budget(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Finished up all the jewelry I’m going to add to the flat car for this project.
Like Devon I decided to just use an open cab and not cover up all the work inside. I did use those stir sticks I showed earlier for the roof sheeting, they are made from Birch and are pretty high quality. I used 8 sticks and at 4 cents each I think my budget is going to be OK. Once the structure was finished I used white glue to cover the roof with a paper towel. My thought was the more porous material would give a better base for the metal roofing to stick to.
Here is that HO scale ribbed roofing that I have had in a junk box for probably 30 years, If I don’t use it here it will probably never get used(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif) I hit it with Gray automotive primer then Cold Galvanizing, then matt clear finish that should hold up to the weathering.
So here it is done less paint and weathering, winding the drums and rigging.
Now to tear it all apart and paint and weather, If I can remember how it all goes back together I should be done on time(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Day 24
A few random pictures of a little progress made today.
Got the back of the water tank lettered and a little base weathering on the fuel tank more to do on both tanks.
A little of the base weathering on the boiler and engine frame. Trying a new technique with the base weathering coat we will see how it ends up.
The drums are wound and ready to mount in the engine frame, I left a couple of feet of line hanging loose to do the rigging but on second thought I will wind it all up then pull what I need for the rigging should make it a little less of a pain with out all that line hanging loose.
Getting the base colors on all the little fussy bits.
If it snows tomorrow like it is supposed to I will be starting on the reassembly, if not I have to take Momma to the city for lunch and a movie

Day 27
Were gonna stick a fork in this dude and call it done. Well except for the final weathering, paint touch-up and installing the canopy.
Will take a few final picts after that is completed and post them in the. In the what, final showing? Hopefully they will be

Rick, I haven’t had a lot of time to do much commenting on the Challenge, but I’ve been following your build from the very first whenever I look in. It came out spectacularly. All the pieces fit together perfectly, the coloring is exceptional, and the detail work is very convincing. I admire fine detail work. I’m with Dan on this, this build is a bookmark. I wish I had something like your build for my railroad.
If David Rooster Russell will go in halves with me, I’d offer to buy it!
