Large Scale Central

Rick's Mik 2019

Hi Dan,

Yes that site belongs to a good friend of mine. The blacksmiths car was built by another good friend and he asked me to make the figure of Tass. I was more than happy to do that as Tass was his uncle and a friend of mine as well. Tass ran a machine and blacksmith shop for many years as a business but his favorite thing in life was scratch building black powder rifles.

I probably shouldn’t point this out(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif) but, if you go there and click on the finescaler drop down my name pops up and you can see some of my builds.

Rick

Day 9, boy time is flying by.

The boom is finished except for final small details (if time allows) and weathering.

The fuel and water tanks are also finished except for weathering. I gave the fuel drum a coat of Hunter Green just to ad some contrast to the blacks and grays. The fuel barrel I got from Boomer a while back with some other stuff, and this looked like a good place to use it.

Time to start thinking about the engine and boom support carriage.

Rick

looks great!

I really am glad you went ahead with a crane build. I am getting plenty of ideas to steal. Which is the ultimate compliment. very nice boom

Day 12

Closing in on halfway for the allotted time, wish I was close to half way with the build(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Dug through the junk boxes and supplies and found some gears that will be close enough to work with, then mocked up a card stock side frame to get an idea for shaft location.

Side frame cradle made up and shaft bores located, I know the gears go inside the frame(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Parts to assemble the drums are all cut and ready to assemble, well except for the dog gears they are laid out and ready to cut.

The drums and gears all assembled and primed. The larger drum, the lowest one, will be the “line” drum and the smaller drum will be for the boom, to raise and lower it.

Another view of the drum cradle, you can just see the drive gear between the two drum gears, sort of a shadow in the picture. The gears actually mesh and turn as a unit, that kind of surprised me as they don’t really match that well for pitch and such.

Hopefully I can spend some time tomorrow and maybe make some headway.

Later

Rick

I’m still impressed by all the details you and Devon are putting on these cranes. Really enjoying watching the crane come together. Great work.

I have drum envy.

Your build is looking terrific. The boom and boiler are so nice. Will your winches have stops on them so when you raise the boom or line they will stay?

Thank you Tod,

Yes, I was thinking about that today. Will probably use a hole and pin method on each drum so that they can be held in place at any complete revolution of the drum.

Not very prototypical but short of motorizing and RC it seemed like the best way to go allowing for the time constraints(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Aren’t those teeth that look like a saw blade the ratchet for stopping the drum?

Rick Marty said:

And here I thought I was gonna be clever. This is exactly how I was thinking about doing it. I’ll have to put two holes in mine so I can be different (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Jim,

yes those are the teeth that catch the dog latch that prevents the cable drum from back spooling.

Devon,

We would have to go clear back to the Cavemen to try to find an original idea, well maybe not for steam cranes

but I think you know what I mean. Everything I do in my builds I have to credit someone else, because I am probably copying

them either consciously or unconsciously. There is so much good information out there now with the Net, it is easy to pick and choose

the best of the ideas one sees presented, the hard part seems to be trying to remember them exactly or where exactly you saw them(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Yes I hear you Rick. Most everything I do is a collection of techniques and ideas I have gotten somewhere else. One of the reasons I love this challenge. Its like a free month long modeling class.

And you do show well up on the catwalk Devon.

And wearing this years latest fashion, foil hat

Day 16 already

My Saturday was just cruising along, everything going really good til I realized it was Sunday(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Well a little more progress, have the boom support bracing finished and the anchors and sheaves in place for the rigging.

The engine is as done as it is going to get except for the throttle valve handle. Will jump back on the boiler tomorrow and should have that finished up in a couple days. Then it will just be some added details, painting and weathering.

I think I am going to be able to complete this build with no charges to the 30 dollar building fund, everything from the junk box, in stock supply or hand made.

Yea, I know it looks it too, right(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

That is coming out very nice.

I love rivet details. Looks great !!

When are we lighting the first fire? You do great work Rick.

Day 19, I think.

All the piping and fittings are made from Romex wire, aluminum welding rod, brass rods, nails, wire insulation,Styrene tubing, dress snaps and whatever else I could find.

Most all the boiler plumbing is completed. the steam lines to and from the cylinders, the throttle valve, the whistle and blow down, the injector, and water line.

The site glass and tri-cocks are on and the pressure gauge is drying but ready to install.

Still to do is the oil burner and it’s piping but should get that today. Only bad thing is now all this has to come off for painting then try to remember how it all went together(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

This doesn’t have anything to do with this build but I was at the local Home Depot yesterday and found a big display of stir sticks in assorted sizes, $1.98 each. I picked up a couple of packs of the larges ones, 8 inches long and about an inch wide. Don’t have any idea what I will use them for but couldn’t pass them up.

Time to get back out to the shop and bring this closer to this finish line.

My switches for the Redding Yards arrived from SwitchCrafters yesterday so gotta get back on that soon.
