And wearing this years latest fashion, foil hat
Day 16 already
My Saturday was just cruising along, everything going really good til I realized it was Sunday(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Well a little more progress, have the boom support bracing finished and the anchors and sheaves in place for the rigging.
The engine is as done as it is going to get except for the throttle valve handle. Will jump back on the boiler tomorrow and should have that finished up in a couple days. Then it will just be some added details, painting and weathering.
I think I am going to be able to complete this build with no charges to the 30 dollar building fund, everything from the junk box, in stock supply or hand made.
Yea, I know it looks it too, right(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
That is coming out very nice.
I love rivet details. Looks great !!
When are we lighting the first fire? You do great work Rick.
Day 19, I think.
All the piping and fittings are made from Romex wire, aluminum welding rod, brass rods, nails, wire insulation,Styrene tubing, dress snaps and whatever else I could find.
Most all the boiler plumbing is completed. the steam lines to and from the cylinders, the throttle valve, the whistle and blow down, the injector, and water line.
The site glass and tri-cocks are on and the pressure gauge is drying but ready to install.
Still to do is the oil burner and it’s piping but should get that today. Only bad thing is now all this has to come off for painting then try to remember how it all went together(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)
This doesn’t have anything to do with this build but I was at the local Home Depot yesterday and found a big display of stir sticks in assorted sizes, $1.98 each. I picked up a couple of packs of the larges ones, 8 inches long and about an inch wide. Don’t have any idea what I will use them for but couldn’t pass them up.
Time to get back out to the shop and bring this closer to this finish line.
My switches for the Redding Yards arrived from SwitchCrafters yesterday so gotta get back on that soon.
Looks fantastic. I’m almost sorry you are going to paint it as a lot of the detail will be harder to see…
I am really really glad you decided to stick with the crane. It is fun to see how we are doing some things the same and how some things you have tackled a different way. And as always your modeling is an inspiration.
Well thank you Devon, and the same back at ya.
Don’t have much to new to show tonight but gotta try to catch up with Devon on posts/pictures(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
All the fiddley bits are about done, at least as done as they are going to get at this time. I will have to revisit this build with a tender car and other pieces but not during this build.
Tomorrow I tackle the canopy and supports, will probably steal a few of Devons ideas and claim them as my own(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)
Not really looking forward to taking this all apart and doing the painting but it goes with the territory as they say.
More later if burnout stays away(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif).
I prefer sharing to stealing. Since I have stolen borrowed from you, I guess it’s fair you borrow from me. Although a can’t imagine what you are borrowing.
Rick, I’m interested to see the crane all rigged up. I have to agree with Jim on the painting. I know it will look great, but it’s gonna make it hard on us folks who will want to come back and steal ideas on the details. Gets better every time you post an update.
Hmm … the two brass ( coat hanger rods ) holding the wood brace ( in front of the spools) upright . I think should have turnbuckles .
Incredible work …
Day 22(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Had some time the last couple days to concentrate on this project and I think I am going to come in on time and under budget(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Finished up all the jewelry I’m going to add to the flat car for this project.
Like Devon I decided to just use an open cab and not cover up all the work inside. I did use those stir sticks I showed earlier for the roof sheeting, they are made from Birch and are pretty high quality. I used 8 sticks and at 4 cents each I think my budget is going to be OK. Once the structure was finished I used white glue to cover the roof with a paper towel. My thought was the more porous material would give a better base for the metal roofing to stick to.
Here is that HO scale ribbed roofing that I have had in a junk box for probably 30 years, If I don’t use it here it will probably never get used(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif) I hit it with Gray automotive primer then Cold Galvanizing, then matt clear finish that should hold up to the weathering.
So here it is done less paint and weathering, winding the drums and rigging.
Now to tear it all apart and paint and weather, If I can remember how it all goes back together I should be done on time(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Nice job. I like the paper towel idea.
Do you think it worked better?
Great job, Rick. Almost time to fire that mutha up (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)Somebody needs to get a photo of your’s and Devon’s crane and put them together side by side in a photo. That would be cool.
Beautiful!
Day 24
A few random pictures of a little progress made today.
Got the back of the water tank lettered and a little base weathering on the fuel tank more to do on both tanks.
A little of the base weathering on the boiler and engine frame. Trying a new technique with the base weathering coat we will see how it ends up.
The drums are wound and ready to mount in the engine frame, I left a couple of feet of line hanging loose to do the rigging but on second thought I will wind it all up then pull what I need for the rigging should make it a little less of a pain with out all that line hanging loose.
Getting the base colors on all the little fussy bits.
If it snows tomorrow like it is supposed to I will be starting on the reassembly, if not I have to take Momma to the city for lunch and a movie
I don’t know which one to hope for(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Enjoy lunch and the movie with Momma
The wise choice would be lunch and movie (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
Your steam crane is really amazing Rick.
