I remember too well. Those were the best years of my life…spanning the last 2 years of High School and my military years. After that, Americans were different…and in my opinion not for the better.
I also remember the sixties and it was in the same period of my life, high school, college and the military. I don’t share the opinion that it was a great time. I remember a Country in chaos and a bunch of radical people trying to force their opinion on everyone else.

It certainly mattered where you were located! Europe was interesting enough without getting bombed out of your mind. Or at least it was for me! 
I never had any problems with alcohol interfering with my memory. On the other hand…old age is doing what booze couldn’t. As for the other mind altering stuff…I left that for those that were crazier than me.
The 60’s, the good ole’ days: 1961 purcahse my 1st HO trainset, 1965 graduate high school, 1966 hire out on the NYC as an operator, 1968 become train dispr for the PC, and in between enjoying great music and traveling about. Times were a lot simpler then.
