Im looking for a reversing unit. Not looking to spend a lot. Anyone have an Aristo, LGB or some other generic one that works well. they dont need and willing to sell. I just need the unit I have the LGB track already.
If you are handy with a soldering iron, they only cost a few $$$ to make your own with a 555 chip.
As an alternative, you can use a 5 or 6 volt regulator with a 5-6 volt relay and power it off the throttle output (rather than the accessory output) because we always run our trains at >7 volts.
Stop buying live steam stuff for a few weeks and just buy the LGB unit. It is the smoothest operating reverse unit I have used when wired to operate without using resistors.

How does an auto reversing unit work with live steam?

Shawn doesn’t like to admit it but he does have a few sparky’s

It’s for M-10 that’s he’s going to build over the winter from a combine…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
Thanks Todd. I know how to solder but that diagram is what has me confused. I have a toy train power pack and the cut rails on either end of the track. in between has me confused.
Vincent that’s the problem Id rather use the money on live steam lol. This is just for my overhead and hate to spend what the LGB cost new. Yes I have a few (cough cough) sparkies but with the overhead I can use them on it and not worry about converting them to battery.
I currently have a cheaper generic reversing unit and works good for now. The one I have causes the motor to make a buzz sound. At some point if I can get a deal on another Ill switch it out. I like the idea Todd gave me, building one but I dont understand all the terminology.
Just switch it out to live steam and dirty up the ceiling.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

After spending more money than I ever care to reveal when I owned my pro audio company, I have learned to live by the “Buy once, Cry once” advice I was given! The smoothness of the operation from the LGB unit makes it worth it IMO. Besides, you may enjoy it so much you could buy more of those new fangled electric things!

Where it says “Power to Reversing Track” connects to the “in between” tracks. As you note, the ends are cut (on one side), but there is a diode placed “around” the cut that lets the current only flow in one direction.
When the train gets past the cut, it stops because the diode is oriented to let current pass when the train is running in the opposite direction. Eventually, the 555 chip triggers/releases the relay and this reverses the current to the center section. The current is also now able to get past the diode and the train starts moving from whence it came.
Shawn,
I have three LGB units a club member gave me. I don’t know if they work. You are welcome to them if you want them.
Pat
Pat,
I’d be interested in one of your LGB reverse units if still available.
Thanks for speaking up.
Did I read that correctly, Pat?.. Free reversing units?!! Hey, if you got an extra one after all is said and done, I’d be interested.

Yes Kevin Pat is that kind of gent. Good people to know (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
they were given to me for free.
i dont know if they work, shawn has first dibs.
Pat Ill take one. Saves me from having to buy one. I appreciate at it and owe you lunch or something.
Well, if Shawn only needs one, I’d be in for one if that’s okay with you, Pat. And if Shawn’s buying lunch, I’ll buy dessert or something. Let me know if that’s all good and thanks for the more than generous offer.
-Kevin.
shawn,
i’ll give you a call
Thanks Pat appreciate it. Ill be a Nicos if your going.
