Question about this. Why can’t I use a pair of DPDT switches to do this outdoors just like I remember from my indoor N scale days (many moons ago). BTW, DC track power. I realize the switches will have to be ‘enclosed’ some how as well.
Randy; what does BUW mean?? I would recommend a loop as it does not require any turn outs, if R/C you will not need any special electronics like you would need for track power. And even that, is not too hard to do. I use spring switchs on mine and don’t need to worry about hand throws. It is all depends on how much room you have to work with. I would not us less than 6 foot radius, anything looks tinny.

Randy:
With track power, you would wire it the same as you would for an indoor HO or N scale layout. For a look you will need to isolate the loop section at the gaps just after the turnout. DPDT wired to mainline and one to the loop.
For a WYE, select the longest leg of the WYE and isolate it the same as the loop - both rails just past the rail joiners. There are several thoughts on which legs to isolate depending on the configuration of the WYE. Again - two DPDT switches are required.
Thanks Steve…I was sure it would work. Why would it take any of those ‘pricey’ reverse loop electronic thing-a-ma-jig units to make it work?
You just have to remember to throw the DPDT switch, is all. That’s the advantage of the fancy electronics–they throw the switch automatically so you aren’t tied to a control panel having to consantly be there to throw the switch back and forth. If you’re using wireless throttles, that’s something to consider. “Way back when” I was still running track power, we had a central controller and a DPDT switch, and I still spent enough time wandering with the train to where I forgot to throw the switch…

I just happen to keep a wiring diagram of my Wye on-line. It is wired as Steve suggests. Once caveat on my drawing; the Frog Power Option shown is incorrect. I never updated the drawing. On a Wye, the nice part is that you plan to stop and reverse so there is less oddity to the operation. Enter the Wye; Stop; Flip the power switch, Throttle up and exit the Wye. No need to change direction on your controller. I pick up my power for the tail from the track leading into it. No separate power run needed.

I mounted my DPDT in an outdoor electrical box on a blank faceplate. The electrical box stands on a piece of PVC conduit that goes into a cement base.
