Revelstoke Railway Museum

Hi all, The weather these past two weeks was just gorgeous, Thursday was the day I finally got on the ball and went to Revelstoke. Used to be a MAJOR railway town in the good old days, a perfect reason to have a Railway Museum.

There was a sign on the steps leading up to the cab of Mikado 5468 “The engineer is in”. Welllll, I sure learned a lot of stuff about oilfired engines in the 40 minutes we chatted. On the way out I picked up to books and overheard some tourist asking “What train was that that went by not long ago?” “Oh, that was the Rocky Mountaineer”. Caught up with it a few kilometers West of town, then had to step on it to get to the “photo curve”

Step on it once more to catch it at Three Valley Gap

Absolutely amazing how much more scenery there is on the 1:1 stuff, eh?

That’s freakin awesome! Thanks for taking the time to post it and for sharing!

Great pics, thanks for posting them! A couple questions…

What is the device in the first two photos? Something for tapping the bolt holes in the rail?

In the pics of the train going past the lake, the tracks run through two wooden structures. Are those snow sheds?

That “Velacipede” is really weathered nicely. Well used, but not abused. Most that I have seen in museums have either been restored to like new conditions or have so much paint lathered on them, that they have doubled in weight. Thanks for sharing.

Gentlemen,

Thank you, my pleasure!

The first two pictures are of a manual drill used to drill the holes for the bolts to attach the joint bars. No threading in this case, just clearance holes for the bolts. A spade drill was certainly the choice in the old days, I wonder what the number of holes between sharpening was.

Ric,

you have mail, if you’d like the full size (3.5Meg), please let me know.

Scenery sure beats the hell out of the stuff we have here in rural Cambridgeshire… : (
