Research On An Abandoned Railroad

Hey guys. I thought you might enjoy this. I’ve been doing research about the railroad I’ve mentioned in my first post when I joined about the Rockport Rock Railroad located here in Maine. First of all I wanted your opinions on my finding about how this railroad operated. In the first photo I posted below it shows one of the engines in the quarry instead of using hoists to unload limestone into a train on ground level. The next photo shows where the tracks used to run based on a rough illustration from an old book. The quarry is about 500 feet long and 30 feet high. Could a small engine like that make it out of there on such a sharp curve and steep grade? In the book it mentions that this engine had problems on the grade getting out and was a bit lightweight but I wasn’t sure whether my map looked any bit accurate. By the way that green arrow indicates where I found a few railroad spikes.

This last photo is of the quarry taken around 1912 shortly before the railroad stopped operating. It looks like they had to dig around the quarry floor tracks and then hoist the dump cars up to the waiting train to take the cars out of the quarry to the awaiting kilns 3 miles away.

I can also try and answer any questions you might have. Not much is documented about this railroad.

Interesting, Caleb.
I really like the old quarry railroads.
Good luck on your research.
Ralph

Very cool! Those are great pics of an interesting RR.

Thanks guys. I’m a big history buff and like to go investigate the old roadbed. It was abandoned in 1900 and you can’t even tell there was a railroad there unless you got a sharp eye. Like I said I managed to find some narrow gauge fishplates and spikes which I donated to the historical society in town. My goal is to someday scuba dive the quarry and see if there’s anything left down there.

Very interesting info & photos. If you find any more please post them!

See now, Caleb, you (or anyone else) could build a real nice small railroad–even an indoor one–based around rock quarry operation. One or two small locos, a few cars, and not too much track. Lots of possibilities for switching moves. Sound good to you, Victor?

Well actually, Joe my garden railroad is inspired by this railroad. Right now I have a loop and eventually I plan to build two turnoffs, one heading to a limestone quarry and the other to a couple lime kilns. I’m even kitbashing an Aristo Rogers to resemble the engine up above. It’s a cross between that and another saddle tank that ran on a different railroad up here. I’ll also have some switching operations put in.
