Hey guys. I thought you might enjoy this. I’ve been doing research about the railroad I’ve mentioned in my first post when I joined about the Rockport Rock Railroad located here in Maine. First of all I wanted your opinions on my finding about how this railroad operated. In the first photo I posted below it shows one of the engines in the quarry instead of using hoists to unload limestone into a train on ground level. The next photo shows where the tracks used to run based on a rough illustration from an old book. The quarry is about 500 feet long and 30 feet high. Could a small engine like that make it out of there on such a sharp curve and steep grade? In the book it mentions that this engine had problems on the grade getting out and was a bit lightweight but I wasn’t sure whether my map looked any bit accurate. By the way that green arrow indicates where I found a few railroad spikes.
This last photo is of the quarry taken around 1912 shortly before the railroad stopped operating. It looks like they had to dig around the quarry floor tracks and then hoist the dump cars up to the waiting train to take the cars out of the quarry to the awaiting kilns 3 miles away.
I can also try and answer any questions you might have. Not much is documented about this railroad.
