Large Scale Central

Request for info... and a thought

Okay, the important part first… We keep Allan’s memory alive with the Mik Challenge every year. But does anyone remember him? I was chatting with him either the night before, or a couple days before. We were talking about finding parts to build a Lombard for our layouts.

But, what I remember (and honestly, miss the most) was the stories of his Allegheny Valley, and the crafty & ingenious designs he used to put out. I had always wanted to pull as much of his stuff as possible and craft a memorial, but like too often happens, life got in the way and next thing I knew, his website/blog was gone. Does anyone remember his site? I’m hoping that if we get it right, we might get lucky and the Wayback Machine might have some (dare I hope for all?) of his stuff.

I came here tonight because I was crafting the caption for my cover image on facebook (a connie-based 2-8-0+0-8-2) for my fictional (A.G.E.) Appalachia Great Eastern, which was written into the history/backstory of my primary system, the Freedom Central. Part of AGE’s history linked all the narrow guage roads of Pennsylvania to the Erie roads in Cuba, NY, and linking them to Pittsburgh via Mik’s Allegheny Valley.

All this to scratch everyone’s noggins for any details they can rescue of his creation.

While I was reading back posts, I saw one thread about an LSC member who recently passed, and I thought, you know, its a shame we don’t have a large list of all the people who were here at one time or another. LSC is basically all that remains of MLS, LSC, the Aristo Forums. There were thousands of us over the last 20 years… I think one day I’d like to sit back in an easy chair, a tumbler of my fav bubbly, and raise a toast of all our friends who’ve taken their last ride on the long black train to the great-beyond.

Hey Jason, long time no hear from you!

I have it archived. Not sure if it’s functional anymore. It’s been years, but I’ll check and get back to you.

I found it, but can’t make it function without some work. I added a way for you to view all the files by adding a simple PHP script to list the directory contents.

Allan didn’t have an index.html as his default main page. Maybe you can figure out which .html file is to top page.

EDIT to add - Could this be the top page? The Allegheny Valley Garden Railroad

Looks like this one

https://cvsry.com/MIK/Ashpit/www.the-ashpit.com.html

EDIT: Maybe not.

EDIT2: This? The Allegheny Valley Garden Railroad

Not a lot of rhyme or reason in how it was laid out. The page I added has a link to the top page, but it references the full URL. The second one I posted has the photo links working.

Making the full site work would take some work. All of his links include the full URL, so the code really isn’t portable. Editing the html files to get rid of the hard coded URLs might work.

This is the best one I could find, but none of the links will work due to hard coding the URL.

https://cvsry.com/MIK/Ashpit/layout1.html

And if you just want to browse the file list as clickable links, it’s here: C.V.S.Ry. Photo Archives

Many of the pages (.html files) work as stand-alone with the photos.

Jason,

Nice seeing you posting here again . I remember MIk quite well so I tried a reverse play on code and this is what I searched out.

www.http//the-ashpit.com/mik/layout.htm

Rather interesting find and plenty of mik info but have absolutely no time to play right now and besides I’m just a stupid mechanic.

A pinned thread on the Annual Site where people can tell their Mik Memories would certainly be good for both newbies and those of you who knew him.

Ain’t gonna get back the $20 he still owes me Bill so I’m out !

Maybe Dave Taylor can make it up to you on the next MIK challenge rooster :chicken: and lift the restrictions for you by $21 bucks… as an incentive. :innocent:

Rooster, is there anyone that doesn’t owe you $20?

Last I checked Dan you were paid in full !

Now don’t make me dig up pics of you at Kens so Bill can photoshop !

Settle down Bill I haven’t posted them yet and Dan might owe me $20 again!

Psst, Rooster, let me know if I got it right in the updated illustrated version.

I traded quite a few emails with Alan and traded parts as well going way back.

Speaking of trading parts…You are responsible for this !!!

Ralphie

I remember Allan. I have 2 Tank cars he sent me with his railroad name for a trade for parts. I also have a motor car or speeder he sent me in exchange for a motor block. I run this every year around the Christmas tree and other layouts i set up to remeber him by…

every time i think about largescale, i remember him.
after one of the “renown” important largescalers had offended me by naming me a “sticks, twigs and Altoid tin modeller”, who was just disturbing the real modellers, MIK just MIK told me to wear it as a badge of honor.
he explained, that it was worth more, to realize something from nothing, than “model” with a cheque-book.
that was in 2009, or so.

My main interaction with Mik was on MLS when I was posting a scratch built loco a dozen years or ago. I did a lot of sketchwork in 2D Cad and Allan was always commenting on some of the fine details.

I mention this as his reputation for scratchbuilding is well known but he could also pull apart a design sketch with a immense eye for detail and possible errors. I owe a lot to him for helping me avoid basic mistakes I didn’t even know I was making.

Cheers

Korm, I know all about that kind of disrespect. Back when I first started building my pizza layout somehow I got on the wrong side of a very prominent g scaler who shall remain nameless but published a prominent but now defunct magazine about model trains in the garden. It was not because my pizza was great example that you didn’t need an acre of land to enjoy large scale or that it was well modeled and detailed, but because it was, as I was told, cute, and this guy disparaged “cute” layouts and kept them out of his rage in favor of only "serious " layouts. This was proven when they did a “small layout competition” which I entered. I took some of the best pictures of it.I didn’t expect to win but I thought that the pizza was a shoe-in for some kind of recognition but, nope nada nothing. In fact the winning layout, was 20 feet by 40 feet!!! That’s not “small” by ANY definition. It was as big as my entire garage! I pointed that out and a few other choice things in a letter to the rag after the results were published. I’m pretty certain I was blacklisted after that as I heard from another model that while respected, this guy was also known for being a real snob when it came to what he considered “real or serious” large scale modeling. Mik’s models would have given him epilepsy. So carry on Korm, my philosophy has always been there’s no wrong way to build a model railway if the end results please you. I learned that lesson from Mik.

PS I made that statement on the Model Railroader forum. You should have seen the flame war that resulted between the rivet counters and everyone else, but that’s another story.
