Renewable energy

I saw a video on Yahoo about how Germany is now getting 30% of it’s energy from renewable resources.
Wind, Solar, Hydro Electric and such.

To date, the President has requested a total of $607 billion for the Iraq war alone since 2003. This is over ten times higher than the $50 to $60 billion cost estimated by the Administration prior to the start of the war. Costs have increased every year since the start of the war in 2003. The Administration has requested $804 billion for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined (CRS 2007, Bumiller 2003).1

How many solar panels and wind turbines would $607 billion buy?
I think it would have at least paid for a big step away from foreign oil dependency.
Ralph

Probably not. We spend more than that each year buying foreign oil.

We can start by putting a wind turbine and solar panels on Ralph’s railroad.

But then Dick and Dubya’s buddies stock options would suffer if we shut down the war machine…

We’ll leave Iraq in another year, not because we won, but because we broke the bank, we’re flat broke with nothing left to spend and we’re being foreclosed on and the probate sold off to China. Thanks Geoerge, Best President Ever, yeap.

I’m sure Haliburton could have built the Hydro- Electric plants so they could still spend the money with their buddies.

Steve,
It is very hard to find how much we spend in a year on oil.
But it is not as much as you think.
According to the US govt. we imported a billion barrels of oil in 2007. Even if we figure $100 a barrel, that is 6 years worth of oil.
And remember, oil was as low as $35.00 a barrel during 2003.
Ralph

Ralph, I got my info from T. Boone Pickens. He otta know…

Mine came from the Energy Information Administration, official statistics of the US government. But my math was off. They give it to you in thousands of barrels. The correct figure is about 11 billion barrels. Considering we imported less and a barrel cost much less in 2003, we could have bought 2 to 3 years worth of oil. At today's price, you are right.........not even a years worth. But 607 billion would have bought a hell of a lot of wind turbines and solar collectors. Ralph

Yeah, but who would want them in their back yard? And the Sierra Club is fighting their placement anywhere, tooth and nail. Something to do with the turbines knocking eagles out of the air, and the solar panels cooking turtle soup. Or something like that…

Who was it that just put in a large order for wind turbines? Was it Clayton Williams? I don’t think it was T Boone Pickens.
Ralph

T. Boon put in an order for something like 650 turbines, to be installed by 2009. Don’t know anything about Mr. Williams.

Oh,
It was T. Boone.
Cool. It is good to hear.
