Removing lettering on Hartland locomotives

I recently picked up a Hartland 4-4-0 in trade, while I love the overall paint job, I wanted to letter it for my own garden railway. Stan can make me the decals once I have funding in place for them. But that left removing the factory printed lettering on the tender and cab sides, without destroying the nice striping and scroll work. I read about using Micro Sol from Microscale to soften up the ink, then using a common pencil eraser. This works great as long as you keep your working surface wet with Micro Sol. The area will be dull in appearance once done and it drys, but from past experience this should be invisible once one glosscoats the new decals. I may glosscoat prior to the decals as it seems they like a nice shiny surface to adhear to and make the decal film the most invisiable. So for now the KL&W 97 is a no name engine! Cheers Mike

Bob should probably move this to another section for better results however try this for an answer,
