Remnants of 1890s Logging RR in Sierra Nevada

Here I share some pics of what remains of the narrow gauge Sierra Nevada Wood & Logging Railroad in the forest between Hobart Mills and Onion Valley in the northern Sierra Nevada. Hobart Mills is about 6 1/2 miles north of Truckee, California. The railroad’s heyday was around 1900.

This is about the only stretch of that part of the SNW&L where ties, such as they are, still exist. Rails are long gone.

The remains of two trestles still exist, but one of them has completely collapsed.

Part of this trestle still stands.

Some of the timbers in this trestle are 12" x 12" x 15’ and are still in good shape.

This trestle has been out of use long enough for tall pine trees to grow up through it.

Thanks for posting those , Art . They are very interesting , and it must have been fun to explore them .
