Large Scale Central

Reminder! It's the hap-happiest season of all

…To score cheap figures and scenery!

Time to check the big box stores, toy stores and farm supply places for diecast vehicles.

If you are indoors, it’s time to check the discount stores for little artificial trees.

And best of all, it’s time to raid the Lemax displays for affordable figures!!! Look at Michael’s craft stores, Lowes, and KMart. If you’re in Western PA, try Pool City and Kraynaks. Big upside -They are less than 1/2 the cost of “railroad” figures, and there are dozens of different ones. Downside, the resin they use is brittle and the paints aren’t UV stable… Just choose carefully, some are 1/29-ish, and others 1/24… quick tip: Got a dollar in your pocket? US currency bills are are 2.61 inches wide and 6.14 long. How about a credit card? They are 2 1/8" high and 3 3/8" inches wide. Useless trivia? A dollar folded in half is 6 feet in 1:24. The other dimension is pretty close to the height of a figure in 1:29. That credit card is 5’ 8" wide in 1:20… And folks won’t wonder if you’re senile when you take them out of your pocket.

Money Miser Mik Strikes Again! I swear, if we all saved a 10th of the money that Mik has taught us to save, we could balance the national debt! Then again, if we were smart, we’d elect Senor Mik to the Senate Budget Committee, and all our problems would be gone by April First!

Thanks for the suggestions Mik. Its nice to know you are still out there looking after the financial well-being of all us large scalers!

(Seriously, I don’t want you to take this as an insult. Your wisdom and ingenuity truly benefit us all.)

-J.D.

I just wish I was only a “miser”. Nobody ever gets rich on Disability.

Sadly, Kim managed to overdraw us buying Christmas stuff, and she really was really trying hard to be frugal! Ya just can’t spend a nickle twice. Now I just need to find some more crap to peddle on fleabay to cover it.

Anybody need some #40 sprockets?

Hey Mik - wasn’t it you a few months ago who said you wanted a K’zoo Civil War set? Both Union and Confederate sets are now on Ebay - I know you probably can’t afford them right now, but you can get into the Christmas spirit and drool over them at:

I hope you don’t think this is cruel of me - I’m afraid I’m only drooling over them myself! :frowning:

I own two K’zoo locos and they’re great performers, BTW.

John, I’ve asked Sanity Clause for a small private income, and a beach bungalow on St John for Christmas every year since I was 18 or 19… He always tells me there is a v-e-r-y lengthy backorder on those. So I generally try not to let money (or lack thereof) worry me too much.

Someday I’ll manage to finish the 4-4-0 I started 3 or 4 years ago, and it will probably run like crap… but it will be all mine.
