1,177 sailors and marines died on the USS Arizona they are remembered not renew anger over the attack but to honor their sacrifice.
Thanks for your post Boomer. Far too many young folks do not know anything about Pearl Harbor or WWII
Noel
My Dad was just talking this morning about this. 76 years ago he was 15 at the time and remembers a kid coming into where he was working and saying they just bombed Pearl Harbor. My Dad’s reaction was “What’s a Pearl Harbor?”
RIP shipmates! USS Arizona BB-39
Pearl Harbour was a catastrophe for the United States and it is well that those who were killed in the outrage should never be forgotten. It did, however, change America - and the rest of the world for that matter. America ceased being a bystander and undercover helper for the UK into a full and leading participant in the struggle that had become WW2. The war could not have been won without the United States and its valiant servicemen and women, plus the efforts of those back home and not in military service. America became a world leader from then on and was in the forefront of constraining those countries with expansionist ideas. As a result more American men and women did - and still continue to - give their lives for freedom in our troubled world.
FYI: The first combat casualty of WWII:
Ensign Rodney Shelton Foss (May 8, 1919 – December 7, 1941) was a United States Navy officer during World War II. He was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor while stationed at Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station.
Ensign Foss was struck and killed instantly by a 20mm cannon shell during the first strafing run, making it highly probable that he was the first US casualty in the Pacific Theater. Excepting those Americans who volunteered to serve in allied military forces before the entry of the United States into the war, his would be the first combat death of the second world war.
6 New Mexicans were KIA on the Arizona, including a pair of brothers from Belen.
I for one, am very proud of the folks on THIS forum for noting Pearl Harbor on December 7th. It was a history-changing day for the entire world and SHOULD be recognized and noted.
On another well known large scale forum, a Pearl Harbor thread was started on December 7th. All was well until one individual thought the thread was “political”. So one of the moderators over there believed it was “political” and warned everyone not to post anything political or religious. I made a comment about the thread and the posters complaining about the “politics” and tonight I see that the thread has been locked! How sad :(.
I think it was headed for destruction. As soon as a retort to post about the “Black Snow” was made, we were setting up to have us vs the Japanese. That IS political.
While I personally think along the lines of this thread, I suppose there are people that think the opposite. That “Black Snow” comment was probably a warning sign.

Greg
Greg,
I think you are right :(.
Gary, with respect to the “other site,” it was not the original post commemorating Pearl Harbor Day itself, but various posts in the ensuing discussion which were flagged by members for the moderators’ review. (For those unfamiliar, I’m the one Gary refers to as “one of the moderators over there.”) The thread which got locked was in the Live Steam forum. Steve S cross-posted the same message in the Public Forum as well. That thread remains open, honoring the day as intended. If the moderators believed the tone of the original post was inherently “political,” then both threads would have been locked. Such is not the case. Only the specific thread where the subsequent posts deteriorated in tone received action on the part of the moderators. I think it’s a gross mischaracterization to read any disrespect to that day or the sacrifices of our armed forces on the part of the moderators simply because we took administrative action on a thread which had deteriorated and strayed from the intent of the original poster.
Later,
K
Apparently I’m missing something because I’m not seeing how a 1960s novel satirizing theatre and method acting relates to the Pearl Harbor topic.

IF the reasoning for locking the thread was ONLY because the OP posted in the wrong category on the forum, then that should have been noted IN that thread and locked…rightfully so. Agreed. There was NO note stating that the thread was started in a second forum. Lack of communication again which occurs frequently over there.
I’m still proud to see a civil discussion occurring on THIS forum. It only took a couple of posts on the other site before it went “downhill” quickly. That’s why I made my comment over there. I believe the comment made by one individual there was entirely disrespectful of the people lost on December 7, 1941. As a combat veteran I just couldn’t let it pass without saying something. I’m not sorry I did and I would do it again! We come from different generations Kevin. I will agree to disagree. I done with this.

I had a reason earlier in the year to sincerely thank a Frenchman for France’s essential, critical role in making America an independent country, and he said to me, his exact words, “Thanks to America for sending your children to Normandy.”
Gary, the reason one thread was locked and another left alone was because one thread had deteriorated into a political debate out of which no good could have come and the other had not. You said yourself the discussion over there went “downhill” after only a few posts, and agreed with Greg’s assessment here of that particular thread turning unduly political. That downhill slide is what the moderators put a stop to. There remains no objection at all to the original post commemorating Pearl Harbor Day. That’s why the identical post in the second forum has been left alone.
Don’t misconstrue moderators enforcing the “no political debate” guideline as disrespect for the military or the sacrifices made on Pearl Harbor Day. Quite the opposite, actually. We took the actions we took because we felt MLS was not the proper venue to debate or diminish what started out as a respectful tribute to our armed forces.
