REMEDY for cracked final drive gear for Bachmnann "CONNIE" loco?

Has anyone successfully “fused” or used any other repair method for a crack or split in the drive gear for a Bachmann “Connie”? OR is there a like replacement from another application?
Also, any remedy that worked for other Bachmann gears is worth a try.

Reported on another recent post, “Tony Walsham’s Bachmann 2-6-6-2 Review”, are a series of unfortunate interchanges with the folk at Bachmann repair – unfortunate as there was no simple remedy such as a replacement gear being sent to the caller.

In short, we may be left to our own devices.

Any gear repair suggestions from Bachmann loco owners?

Mike Williams and I looked at an LGB gear and axle that is similar in length, and diameter. It was from an older “sandwich” motor block type.
It is close, but I can’t recall why we didn’t proceed. Maybe he will chime in here.

Wendell,

I will be announcing a replacement motor and gearbox, in about two weeks. I have shipped a few (7). TOC has been running the handbuilt drive for more than a year, he also has one of the first production drives to finalize the installation instructions.

I am working on a backlog of conventional conversions and will start on a run of 25 Connie Drive units units in two weeks. I will announce the prices and order process at that time.

Hi Barry.

I hope that includes the gearbox you promised for me.

I have a very good customer here who has a deadish loco.

Tony,

I will keep you in mind. I have written the install in the chassis, but TOC is writing the whole thing, so I will back out of the way. I haven’t installed into the boiler/cab, TOC has, we’re hoping for a simple template. The motor mount is much larger than the little Mabuchi Bachmann provided. A Pittman is much larger, in fact cannot be installed straight up, but is 90 degrees to the rear.

This is the same motor I have used for 16 years and the same gears (without fail) for the past six years.

I believe this will be my best work, so far.

Barry-
Thanks!
Good news for those with the “cracking gear problem” – you may discover how many by the orders you receive.
Wendell

Wendel and Tony,

I will be starting a run of 25 units this coming week.

If you are interested in the progress on this solution, please check “Rolling Stock” below, then the heading “Barry, how are you doing?”.

I will post, like a blog, I guess, but it will be current.
