Large Scale Central

Real problems

This one on one of the very important mainlines of the Austrian Federal Railways

Not a good day.

No that is not good at all.

Oh, so thats where the the Neville island bridge builders ended up.

Yeah, one could call it a static problem, even though it moved. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Yikes!

Wow. That will sure take some time to clean up. I wonder how they caused it. I see temprary steel shoring on the right has collapsed toward the camera.

Well folks here we see another example of why we shouldnt use yellow polyurethane foam board for structural use. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I’ll have a look what the first write up in Austria mention. Surprisingly this happens more often than one would expect, but it’s the first time I see it crash across a rail line.

PS The cause hasn’t been determined yet, but both scaffolding and one of the piers could be likely causes. BTW there are two separate, parallel road bridges (2 lanes each) at that location. The second road bridge had to be closed because the counterweight of the crane used on the collapsed bridge interfered with the one still standing.

What a mess!

Expected resumption of rail traffic: 2015/03/07 at the earliest, international rail traffic being rerouted through Hungary and Slovenia.

HJ, that is a PROBLEM! Maybe a case of not listening to the engineers and the inspectors. Concrete needs to cure for 28 days and be supported during that time frame.

Thats going to be an interesting construction team meeting tommorow morning

It happened Saturday around 18:00 local time, 800 metric tons of “toast”, first estimate is € 30 million.

Comment from the CEO of the bridge construction company.

„Nach meinen Vorstellungen und auch jenen der anderen Experten hätte das halten müssen. Es hat am Freitag Messungen gegeben, es wurden dabei keine Veränderungen festgestellt. Auch der Beton war in Ordnung, er war genügend hart, dass er auch allein die Brücke halten hätte können.“

<It is my, and other experts, belief that the construction should have held up. The measurements from Friday showed no diviations/changes. The concrete was set sufficiently and in good shape to hold the bridge on its own (i.e. without the scaffolding)>

Gee, um, ah, so I am not the only one who has been routed through “terminal hold” before?

The same thought passed through what passes for my mind.

Good thing a train wasn’t underneath when the bridge came down.

An express passenger train passed through there 3 minutes prior to the collapse.
