Kevin were the track?

Good question. Remember this scene…

Yeah, it’s all still there (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif). Hoping spring comes early.

Oh boy now Rooster knows you have a pool. You might wake up one morning and see him swimming in it with his speedo(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Nice work. The walls look great.

Rooster in a speedo would not be as bad as Larry Otis in a speedo.

I’m just sayin.

Some things are best left unseen.

David- You’re starting to scare me. You’ve actually taken the time to visualize who would look better in a speedo. No more model airplane glue for you.

-Kevin.

Ah, um, ok.

It’s just that I know both of those characters and…ah…ok

Where’s the brain bleach?

Don’t worry, David. Your secret is safe with me… And the 3788 other members of this forum… Oh, and the thousands of other visitors to this site each day… Oh, and not to mention the millions of internet users, worldwide. Yep, totally safe (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif).

Okay. You can exhale now. I know you’ve been holding your breath, just waiting for the mid-summer update. Well, wait no longer… Here it is…

The Mid-Summer Update!

(insert dramatic theme music here)

Progress continues at the feverish pace of a geriatric sloth on barbiturates. We’ve graduated from moving tons of dirt, to moving something even more exciting… tons of stone. Stone, as in BALLAST! Yep, that’s right. The time has come to lay some track. And maybe even lay some cable- you know… for track power. The two upper loops are completely ballasted and work has begun on the lower loop. There are no grade changes. When we finish with the coarse ballast, we will top it off with some finer stone dust.

All curves are 20 foot diameter or greater- mission accomplished. I used an Aristocraft Dual Rail bender and either bent some flex track or unbent some sectional track to make all curves. Tales of the deed can be found here:

http://largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/25588/aristocraft-dual-rail-bender

and here:

http://largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/25587/consecutive-rail-bending

Anyway, here are some update pics. 'Cause I know all y’all like pics!

Maple Curve is at the very front of the layout and now has two completed upper loops. The lower loop of track still needs ballasting.

This path is to the right of Maple Curve. The area on the right hand side where the small red line is, will be the continuation of the lower loop. The lower loop crosses the path after Maple Curve. I’ll need to make a proper grade crossing for the riding mower and people.

After the lower line is completed and ballasted, I will build a mountain here. The inner track will go through the black drain pipe tunnel. The track that is currently supported with cinder blocks will eventually skirt the back side of the mountain. I’ll probably reuse some of my old trestle and maybe a bridge or two, as well as some rock ledges to support that track.

On the other side of the mountain, I’ll install the water feature. If all goes well, the water will flow under this bridge. If not, then the bridge is gonna look real stupid here. We are currently in a state of drought, so digging really sucks. The ground is like concrete. But hey, I’ve got some experience using a shovel.

Eventually, I’d like to be able to run trains right out of the shop and on to the layout. So, I added this switching debacle in order to get trains from the shop to their respective tracks on the layout (I know- there’s an “S” curve, but I’m only using it to move trains on and off the layout). It ain’t pretty, but it will serve it’s purpose. I still have to extend the top most turnout towards the shop. Maybe next year. Oh… and the long single tunnel has been revamped into two smaller tunnels.

So there you have it. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Devon are you seeing this!!!

Kevin that awesome!! It looks great! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

How come there are no trains in the pics? Are you able to run any yet?

Yes, that’s called a lot less talk and a lot more action…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Great progress, like your layout.

Yuppers, nice progress… Lookin’ good… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

This can’t be… Where was the group effort? The kibitzing, the wild thread drift???

One of my favorite memories on the drive from Sandy Eggo to the boy scout camp in the 1950s was the railroad bridge over a dirt patch (dry wash) and the sign No Fishing From Bridge!

When that big rain comes you will look like a genius! Make the sign!

LOVE IT!

However your mommy is gonna be pissed you ripped up the yard like that though!

Guys- Thanks for the very kind words.

Sean- No trains running, yet. The track is pretty dirty after being pulled up and stored for a season (or two). I only cleaned the ends for a good electrical connection. I suppose I really could/should just clean all of it and run something, but I think the continuous temptation to run trains might seriously impede my forward progress (sounds real technical, no?). Plus, I still have to lay some track and rough ballast the lower line and then fine ballast everything. Maybe once I get all that done I’ll clean the rails, plug in some power and have some fun.

John- I’ll add that sign to the “To Do” list.

-Kevin.

that is impressive!
