RDC Trip in Canada

Part of our American Invasion this year included a trip on a “Milk Run/Flag Stop” RDC going from Sudbury, Ontario to White River, Ontario. This came about because of a conversation with our Canadian friends and a reference to a magazine article in the January, 2006 RailFan & Railroad Magazine called “Budd Cars Across the Canadian Shield”. The train leaves Sudbury at 0900 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

it is scheduled to arrive in White River at 1800, ours was at 2030. On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday it travels back from White River to Sudbury. Once again, 0900 to 1800. Ours arrived back at 2000.

This is the equipment

The train is loaded with anything and everything depending on the time of the year. Ours started out loaded with 7 canoes, about 25 people, lots of camping equipment and building supplies.

It stopped in small communities, where the train or a plane were the only way in

or just along the tracks were it looked like a good place to launch into the Spanish River or many other lakes or streams.

And watched the crew help unload supplies for people that seemed mighty hearty. She was 88 and he was 93.

The scenery was unbelievable

So was the equipment we met on a very busy line

We did a lot of sightseeing

And I even had a chance to sit at the helm. You can think I’m catching a nap or I’m watching the speedometer.

I’ll leave that up to you. It was a once in a life time experience, in a beautiful part of the World. I learned so much about flag stops, milk runs, mixed daily scheduled trains and how the railroad was the communication line of the community. One of the greatest things to me was the little screen on my cell phone that kept saying “No service available”. Wow, was that great.

Wow! I enjoyed talking with you about that trip, but the pictures really bring it to life. Looks like way too much fun!

I’m jealous…BIG TIME…!!

Looks like you guys had a great time.

Thats neat , and operating information to be copied . looks like a great trip and a lot of fun . Thanks for the reports and pictures .

How many RDC’s did you have before the trip ? Any to be added since ?

I just have one. But thinking of adding a second made from a baggage coach. The VIA RDC’s were paired as two with an extra one in case one broke down. Basically two coaches and one baggage. Power operation was basically a 3 notch throttle and a lot of drifting with application of small amounts of brake to keep it at or under the speed limit. Top speed was about 75 mph and there was one area where they were aloud to approach that. It was a long and straight area. Most speed was between 35 and 50. Lots of the line was realy short on visisbility with usually being able to see about 1/2 mile down the track. We did come around one curve and had some kids flagging us down. Threw it in neutral and applied full brake. Came to a stop in about 100 feet with no one going foward in their seats. That was impressive. On the way back we lost one of the engines and except for a light on the dash, it went pretty much unnoticed. Acceleration was maybe impacted a little, but I couldn’t really notice.

The crew was very familiar with railfans and said many of them new more about the cars than the crew did. Engineer said when he moved the one lever it went forward and the opposite for reverse. When he pulled on the red handle the brake would apply and it would stop, either slowly or quickly. He knew how to blow the horn and the bell came on automatically and had to be shut off manually after blowing the whistle. Great Guys with a good sense of huimor and a great selling point for the railroad. They truely loved their job and like it far better than frieght trains that paid more.
