Rattle Can Re-Do (Or how to destroy a perfectly good LGB coach)

I love my LGB streamliners but sadly they never made them in Great Northern livery…So I got out a spray can. I made coaches, dome cars, and even an observation…But wanted an RPO. LGB never made an RPO. WARNING…If your a rivet counter or serious LGB collector you may want to avert your eyes!

The idea…

Finished…

The break down…

1 LGB streamlined coach on ebay…$50.00 (bought coach and obs for $100.00)

2 cans of Rustoleum…$7.98

1 roll gold automotive pinstripe…$6.99

Left-over dry transfers from years ago and scrap styrene…$0.00

I’m happy with the results but it ain’t no museum piece!!!

Nice paint job. I remember well the day I hacked into our LGB mogul back in the late 80s to put in RC. After the first time it was a lot easier for future work on stuff

Great work. What’s the thickness of the styrene you used to cover the windows?

Shouldn’t part of the title really be "(Or how to create a perfectly good RPO?)

When do we get to see it outside with the rest of the GN stuff?

By the way, you don’t need any of those screwy img tags over here…

Mark, great rebuild… looks good…

Bruce…I “cut out” the window sections and replaced them with .080" styrene, I backed this up with a larger piece of .060". This allowed me to keep the top and bottom of the original car sides so I could use the LGB roof and floor units to screw right back on as normal. The styrene was a near perfect match in thickness! I re-used four of the now removed windows for the doors.

My new outdoor layout is under construction so no outdoor run sessions yet. :frowning:

Very nice and most useful conversion. I like the paint job too, not only for its neatness but also because it’s one of my favorite RR paint schemes.

I agree with Bruce "Shouldn’t part of the title really be “(Or how to create a perfectly good RPO?)”

Great job Mark!! Can’t wait to see the rest of the train.

Wow! exceedingly perfect.
Although, I don’t think I could or, would do that to my B&O Streamliners.
Great job Mark.

You did a great job on that seam. What did you cut it with? You might think about submitting an article to Garden Railways.

Super Job!

BZ.

David…I admit to a fair amount of “nerves”. Even the undecorated ones are demanding pretty high prices on ebay. Tough to chop up a perfectly good coach!

Bruce…I scored a line with a t-bar straight edge and a standard utility knife (the big Stanley ones). After 5 or 6 passes I “snapped” the car body. It made for a very clean cut, no sanding required. I also got sneaky and hid the seam under the gold pinstripe, though honestly you couldn’t see it anyway.

The cargo door grab rails are from LGB 2-bay coal hoppers. Every car I ever bought had a couple extra, guess there was a reason to hang on to 'em.

Really fine job on the remodel, Mark.

Excellent work!

Looks much better. There is nothing better then seeing a perfectly good LGB car being cut up and repainted into something better.
