Rare Find! SP&S 700 Farewell to Steam Excursion 1956

Plus SP&S Challenger 910, a bit of Northern Pacific and UP in Washington State. Is this Heaven? No, it’s Washington. There is a bunch of newly found, rare footage from an estate find, including SP&S, UP, MILW, Spokane International, NP, GN. I know how I’ll be spending my weekend.

What makes me happier than looking at the video is that the heirs actually looked at the film and decided it was worth keeping. So many treasures end up in landfills because people don’t want to be bothered to sort through a lifetime collection of stuff. If it wasn’t for my wife, all of her family pictures, some going back 4 generations, would have been in the dumpster. Sadly, I wasn’t able to be there when my father’s home was emptied. I know there was stuff that I would have liked to have that didn’t make it out alive.

First Class Steve. Most enjoyable. I see there is some MILW stuff in the other footage.

Awesome find Steve. I think that Challenger spent more time going backwords, but it sure looked good.

Dribble…thank you, Sir - that’s wonderful!

Great video … Something special or strange… using a challenger for switching duty… Did anyone else notice that there were polling [ 5:27 & 12:25] pockets on the challengers tender. Maybe switching duty was part of the original idea.

I belong to a Yahoo Group dedicated to the SP&S (SPSRY). Someone asked the same question about the Challenger going backwards, and this is the posted answer:

“Jerry; What you saw was the Scribner Turn almost half there work was backing up, it was 3rd Sub Job Parkwater to Scribner, but they were bulletined to go to South Cheney. Bax…”

I don’t know exactly where Parkwater and Scribner are, but from the South Cheney comment, I suspect that they are somewhere southwest of Spokane, WA.
