Railroad Museum of PA Garden Railroad tour

Hey guys,

The RR Museum of PA is sponsoring a garden railroad tour in and around Lancaster on Sunday October 9. Ten railroads were slated to be on the tour, and that’s up from about 7 two years ago.

Here’s a link to the museum with all the info:

Mark

Hey Mark ,
Just wondering if Ken Murray is in your club? If so tell him I said hello!

My annual Columbus day weekend trip to PA has been shelved once again due to budget constraints. If it hadn’t I wouldn’t be too far away, staying in Burnt Cabins and visiting the EBT.

A few of the guys from our club are heading down to it. I wish I could make it but I have to work those days and a little too far to go for just the day. If anyone goes post some pictures.

Wimp. I've done York from here as a day trip.

LOL I did that too although its easier to when you stay in one spot rather then jumping around from area to area. By the way let me know when you are around on a monday or tuesday so I can stop up and run trains on your layout. Ill even help ya get the layout in order.

 Weekdays are tough unless it’s a holiday, which probably means you are working. I’ve already put in for a 4-day weekend over Columbus Day, but will probably stay home. You working that Monday? I would really like to have you over before winter.

Hi Dave,

Ken is on the tour, but I won’t see him since all the railroads are open at the same time. In fact, I’ve never seen any of the other railroads, except in pictures posted by people who go on the tour!

Shawn and Jon, sorry we won’t see you guys. There will be lots of pictures and maybe even some videos, I hope. Lots of New Haven power on hand including an RS-3, RDC-3, a mikado and an unmatched FA-FB-FA set.

Mark, When you see him tell him I said hello. I need too hook up with him and pick his brain. I met him at fall ECLS last year which was a very cool day for me and meeting him iced the cake! There is a bit about it at the end of this link. http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=12554

Nothing like the last minute to get stuff done. I’m currently working on the following for the open house:

  1. Installation of roundhouse tracks and powering them.
  2. Repairs to buildings.
  3. Assembly of buildings that have been in kit form for over 5 years.
  4. Finishing kitbash of searchlight caboose.
  5. Repair to mikado driver axle.
  6. Repair ballast wash out for the never ending rain we’re having here. It is f’ing raining here AGAIN…
  7. Install metal wheels for Jim’s show hoppers.

Oh, and just for fun, I decided to enter a 5k road race this Saturday.

Nothing like having a short to-do list and having to find other things to fill in the hours of the day.

Mark looks like the weather should be nice finally. We have had over 14 inches of rain for this month and over 20 inches last month. its insane this weather.

Shawn,

I am hoping the weather guys are right. Who knows. It was drizzling out there last night when I was finishing up the ballast work.

I did get through cutting and priming the boards that will hold the roundhouse apron tracks. All I need is a little dry weather so I can spray paint them with the ‘stone fleck’ paint I picked up the other day.

Did a thorough job of reballasting the entire railroad, so that should be good to go. Need to get ballast trains out there running asap. Item #6 on the list was really the biggest job out there. Leaves are starting to fall, so I expect I will have a little more clean up on Sunday. MB said she’ll mow the lawn on Thursday plus do some weeding here and there. Awesome!

Most of the buildings are patched up and ready to go. One small roof on the switch tower to go.

Parts for the searchlight car should be arriving today. Ready for that.

I’ve been chatting with the guys about the equipment they’re bringing. A mix of track powered revo equipment will run with a nice mix of on board battery equipment. Need to add a few extra tracks to the round house, though. Six tracks won’t cover it. I counted 7 operators for Sunday. Some will only have a brief time, so I am planning to make up a train orders board. That way, the guys who need to leave early can run early, etc…

Getting excited. Need to update my ‘story’ binder since we’ve had quite a few updates since 2009.

Edit: Oh, and I finished 5th overall on Saturday out of a field of about 300. My time was 18:42, or 50 seconds slower than last year. Still top 5 collected hardware: a 0.5L hefe-weitzen beer glass with the race logo on it. Also, my 3 year old raced a 1/8 mile and was second. His first running race and he did great! So proud!

Congrats Mark on the race. I use to run in High School and college. I still run once in a while. Now I do more hiking, xc skiing, Mt biking… Easier on the joints. College killed me with all the miles they had us doing. How many times a week do you run?

Shawn,

On average, about 30-40 miles a week. It’s about all I can do with the limited time I’ve got. A few years back, I was doing closer to 60 miles a week.
