RailPro Load Settings for Bachmann 3-Truck Shay

Thanks to a club member friend my Bachmann 3-Truck Shay is operational with RailPro. I have the LM-4 module installed. I ran the engine for the first time yesterday. Initially it ran with no problems. After a bit I it would stall with motor overload warning. I checked the load and it was about 450. I ran the auto test several time and was able to get it to 850. I’m not sure what the typical load setting so would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Richard

You can set it manually to a higher value, but that symptom might indicate a motor that is overheating, or maybe some binding in the drive train.

I’d let it run at the 850 setting and see what the result is. It may just be that the motors draw a bit more when warm than they do cold. I don’t have a 3 truck so can’t tell you what “normal” is.

It will not hurt the RP module to set it too high. A high setting will only limit RP’s ability to detect a small problem. It should still shut down for a major problem.

Thanks Jon! I’ll play with the settings.

Hi Richard. I’m curious as to how you made out. Did it stop throwing the error after setting the value higher? If so, what did you settle on for the full load current setting ?

Hey Jon,

I think things are going to work out. I did the auto test again Sunday night and got a load reading of 1950. Tried to do a track test but the engine kept derailing in one spot. Discovered one rail came loose from it’s connector. Of course I always do these things at night when I’m not prepared to repair. So, hopefully after some rental house work today I can get out later this afternoon and get things operational.

I’ll let you know what happens.

Thanks,
Richard
