Railfaning in Port Jervis NY

We took the kids to the NJ Transit station/yard in Port Jervis NY -Metro North Line While we their we got to see a NJ transit engine as well as an MTA Metro north engine. he engineer was just getting off his shift and asked if the kids wanted to go inside the engine. We all ended up going in and getting a tour. The kids even got to blow the horn. I never new the nose of the engine serves as a bathroom. The area is also home to the old port jervis train yard and turn table. They have a few engines and passanger cars on display. MTA engine we got to go inside of.

Erie RR turntable

High Point Monument in J between the two telephone poles

Not sure what these were used for (the metal tower things)

This is an old arial view of the Port Jervis Yard with the round house. The turn table is the above picture but the round house burned down. Picture had alot of glar from the glass.

Nice pics and sounds like a good time for the kids,on the loco and blowing the horn.
I believe those are sand towers.

Cool !
I love that Erie E8 !
Ralph

What kind of loco is that?
An F40 narrow cab?
Never mind.
A GP40FH-2M

Its a GP40-FH2. Sort of a Mongrel

Bob, We both hit the reply button at the same time?
Not a dismal fan in particular, I do like fully cowled locos.

The metal towers are sanding towers. Air pressure/air flow carried the dry sand up to the top of the tower to fill the tower hoppers. Gravity then fed the sand through hoses to the sand bunkers on E and F units.

Now image yourself trying to time your bathroom break between signals, crossings, etc. Quickly hit alerter and you have 90 seconds to get down into the head, do your business, and get back up.. On some of the older GP units it is an interesting contortion to get into and out of the head.

Now you know why we have a back door to the cab…

Craig

Why can’t the Conductor - Brakeman hit the alerter?
I doubt the boss would notice…

You wouldn't want to wake up the sleeping conductor now would you? ;)

Craig;

You mean that he doesn’t wake up when you call out the signal indications to him? (He’s supposed to repeat them back.) Well, my last and only road job was in 1982 during the BLEF strike, so perhaps I’m a bit rusty on the rules. Fledgling NS sent out the non-contracts to keep the trains running.

Have fun,

Only for about the first 2 months when they are new... Then they fall asleep like babies. :P Huge difference between what the rules say, and what goes on in the cab... ;)

You were there just a little late to see the really good stuff… :stuck_out_tongue:

(Any excuse to share some neat old photos)

Mik great pictures. I was in Port Jervis when they brought that live steam train through. I think it was in the early 90’s Its too bad they dont have those other engines on display. They were going to make it an annual event until the owner of the engine blew it up by running it too fast and too high. At least thast what rumor is.

Ross Rowland didn’t “blow it up”. He DID however pretty much wear 614 out (Just like he wore out the American Freedom train/Chessie Steam Special Reading T-1 2101 before it), AND tried to scr#w over his creditors who put a BUNCH of liens on it… (Not to mention stepped on a BUNCH of folks toes at the RRs - Guys who eventually moved up the corp ladder, and now won’t allow steam to run on THEIR RR… ESPECIALLY anything to do with Ross.)

Since then he’s collected a bunch of money from the unsuspecting on a “Yellow Ribbon Express” scheme to honor vets (NEVER materialized, and probably never will, see above), and last I heard he was tangled up with some scheme to run a high roller train between DC and the Greenbriar Hotel. IIRC, he sold the principle some clapped out Alco diesels to ‘get it started’, and “planned” to introduce 614 on the point eventually… (I’m pretty sure that “fell through” too, … surprise! surprise!) Last I heard 614 was in Clifton Forge Va.

Lots of older foamers, however, still love him because he was a showboater while it lasted.

Its shame they dont run steam through their. Its really a scenic spot especially in the fall with the Kittatinny ridge in the background and the delaware river on the other side.

I was at the C&O museum at Clifton Forge, VA this past September. You can see 614 in her “Greenbriar” livery in this photo. We were told the locomotive would eventually be on display at the Greenbriar Hotel. The locomotive may have arrived there by now, but I don’t have a way to confirm that.

Nice pictures Shawn, I get down there time to time, I have some great pictures of the Table as well. I used them for reference material for building my turntable. Sure wish i was around when the Roundhouse was still standing. Nick
