I’m building a portable JMRI system, very compact, a tiny notebook running windows, a tiny wifi access point, and a NCE PowerCab with a TAM Valley 5 amp booster, and the USB interface.

Works great, etc.

I was thinking of also different throttles, and of course this system has the NCE PowerCab, and as many other regular wired NCE cabs, and also use any cell phone using the apps.

But the RailDriver console also caught my eye, not everyone wants to walk around, and since I have this laptop and other hardware, perhaps a more realistic “console” would be fun in addition:

So I just got mine… notice you have all the engine controls, plus rows of configurable buttons for DCC functions… The decoders I use have functions defined into the 20’s so just a few buttons on a screen are not really enough.

If you’re not going to move around have you thought about putting some miniature cameras in the locomotive and then having displays near the throttle? That would really complement that throttle!

Yes, a camera on the loco is next… I do have cameras covering most of my back yard, so you can indeed sit and watch the cameras and drive the train for the most part.

The fun part is the levers and controls…

I could envision at least 3 - one forward, plus one on either side - have the displays arranged so you feel like you’re in the cab! - Oh, wait, how about a cab mock up??? Was that a Shay in the first video ? If not the chuff rate to speed was way off and with the exception of the the whistle the sound was hideous !

I remember an article in either MR or Craftsman years ago when Lionel came out with their train camera. A guy had I think and Oscale railroad and he put the camera on a car in front of the engine. Then he had a full mock up of a diesel cab you sat in and it had a large screen in front of it where he had the video from the camera projected. So you looked out the front cab windows and could watch where you were going. Throttle and brakes were all on the control stand just like a real diesel I think he even had the dead-man switch in the thing.
