Large Scale Central

Rail Truck from a Ertl Bank

I picked this little truck up at a flea market

and decided it would look neat as a rail truck. Below is the modified chassis.

Below is the modified chassis, I am using the drive unit from an Aristo-craft motor block.

Next I modified the cab roof so I could fit a driver.

Below is the assemble chassis and Running Boards, motor is also installed.

Let me know what you think so far!!! More to come.

Very interesting! That’s a die cast model, right? What are you using to cut and shape it?

Kewl!

Neat job. That motor should make it fly! Are you going to use Delrin Chain and sprockets or gears to connect it to the drive unit? Good idea using that.

Singing… Anticipation…

Nico: Is it too late for a “Before” picture?

Ray, I am using my Dremel with a cut off Wheel.

Jerry, I am using Delrin Chain and sprockets I purchased from McMaster Carr.

Lou added picture above of what it kind of looked like, same truck different paint scheme.

Cool

Will it have a plow with cutouts for HEP cabling and ditch lites?

I cant wait to see it run Nico

A plow I can see, sometimes it could come in handy. But what is HEP cabling and, again, why would anyone want to light up a ditch?

:stuck_out_tongue:

Very cool, Nico.

I am adding a couple of more pictures of the rail truck,

Here we have the axle out of the FA gear box, with modified c-16 tender wheels.

You can also see the sprocket and the chain drive.

This is a top view, you can see the motor mount, wires, top sprocket and chain.

I made it so the rear axle could pivot to allow the truck to track better over uneven track.

You can also see the red tail lights I added using 3mm LED’s

http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/nicoc/_forumfiles/DSC03033%20(640x480).jpg

Here is a view of the front, I drilled out the solid plastic lights and installed yellow 3mm LED’s.

I then potted the LED’s in Epoxy, this was not a good Idea. I think maybe if I had used white LED’s

it would have turned out better, but now it is very hard to even see the lights. I will try again.

You can also see the power pickup on the front wheels.

And here is the driver I stuffed in the cab. I still have to finish the box truck roof.

a little more detail, and I think she will be finished.

If you have any ideas on the head lights please let me know. They look good, they just don’t

function as I would like.

Nope, push bar and cherry bombs sticking out the sides!

I was having the same problem with my rail trucks until Ray Dunakin posted a website that sells LED’s with a bridge rectifier wired in to them.

Try here: http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/bl-212.html

I find silicone adhesive good for fixing things in place such as LEDs…easy to remove as well.

Ross,
But will the light shine through the silicone?
