Rail Simulator "Games"

anyone into these types of things? any suggestions?

I have MS Train Simulator and Railroad Tycoon 3. I’ve spent many hours enjoying both. There are others that some say are better, but I have no experience with them.

RR Tycoon III is the one I like the best. I tried an old one called Train Engineer but didn’t like it as much. Don’t even think it’s still around. I’ve seen MS Train Simulator, but other than the graphics I wasn’t impressed.

RR Tycoon III requires you to build your own RR empire sometimes against yourself and depending on which scenario you play against other RR Tycoons.

I’m a fan of MS Train Sim, but find it frustrating on anything but a “go from point A to point B” route. The interface is a bit odd.

On the other hand, if you like dispatching, Train Dispatcher (http://www.softrail.com/railsof.html) is a blast.

Hi! I’ve played the railroad tycoon and the MS Simulator. Neither of which I was
really thrilled with. With the railroad tycoon, you spend more time “building” your
railroad through mergers and aquisitions then you do actually running the trains. Running the trains is what I’m after. MS Simulator comes closer, but there’s not much choice in the way of locomotives that interest me. (Being a Pennsy fan I’m funny that way) Also the terrain in which you run is limited as well. I’ve heard from several groups that there are individuals out there that can and do modify or create new locos and terrains. I’ve yet to find anyone on my own. So I am still looking for that “elusive” eastern railroading game with locos and equipment in the 1900-1950 range.

Try this site:
http://www.train-sim.com/

It seems to have a lot of stuff listed.

There’s a train sim called “Trainz” (listed at the above site). It started out as a model railway simulator but I think it morphed into something like MS TS. I’ve never seen it in the flesh but it’s supposed to be a nit more user friendly than MS TS.

Or this one:

This one lets you run trains on track plans (comes with the tried and true 100 plans from Model Railroader plus a bunch of plans submitted by users.) It also lets you create track plans. Pretty nice program.

Santa brought me a “Rail Driver” one year. It makes Trainz and Train Sim just like being the engineer. It really ups the “fun” factor.

As a former train dispatcher I enjoy “Train Dispatcher” the best espicially the Conrail lines in the Midwest.

With my model railroad, out in the back yard; we walk along with our trains. We do all sorts of switching and actually operate the railroad. Why would I sit inside in front of a screen when I can actually operate a real pike outside…
I did at one time have one of those “Games” but soon tired of it and now I much prefer operating my own real railroad.

I would sit inside in front of a screen while four inches of rain fell in two hours.

With you, Fred!!!

When our grandsons visit, we sometimes jump on the web and watch train vids - good fun. Cale, your two eldest are about the same age. Try “MRL/BNSF Loaded Coal Drag coming out of Mullan Tunnel” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-ztLI8op04

thanks guys!

Cale,
Microsoft has a new Train Simulator coming out. As usual with MS…it is behind schedule.
Might be worth waiting for though.

It was supposed to be out this year…now says Holiday 2009. How vague is that? I guess you better not wait for it…your children might be in college by the time they actually release it

Cale: I have MSTS, and Sid Mejer’s “RAILROADS” as well as Railroad Tycoon. I’m not currently playing any of them … if you want I’ll send you the discs with the other stuff so you can try it out.

sure Matt., I’ll give it a spin!
