R/C Accucraft Carrot!

Watch this space, guys, for a write-up and movie about my 16mm Accucraft NG/G16 Carrot, now converted to 2.4GHz radio-control.

My good friend, Rod Blakeman, carried out the conversion, and not only installed the twin-servo r/c by removing about ten pounds of unwanted bevel gears, cranks, and drive-rods that made the valve movements, but has also made up completely new steam pipes out of copper and installed mesh flame enhancers in the burner units…it seems that it now runs like a mad thing!

Did you have one of those chuff boxes installed ? From youtube videos , they really make a difference in the exhaust sound .

Here is how I converted a Garratt to R/C.

Yup, that’s the way to do it.

Sadly, the cost of sending my Carrot to you to carry out with work would prolly have been more than the loco cost me in the fust place, so, sorry 'bout dat, Tone. I also already have four r/c locos using the common Futaba 2.4GHz digital transmitter, so sticking with that seemed a good plan, as too.

Take comfort in the fact that Gordon’s flame trap mods have been installed anyhow - he was kind enuff to send me a few kits for carrying out his excellent and paint-saving mods on a few other Carrots blonging to friends.

Do you still want to see it? Or you could just turn your head away when it’s posted.

Terry my posting was meant to be along the lines of how I installed the servos, so removing a bunch of linkages.
Not so much pushing the RCS servo driver.

I am well aware of the various 2.4 Ghz R/C equipment.
I am selling more and more of my EVO brand battery R/C systems for use with these UHF systems.

Hey, don't take offence!!! I just happen to have bought my first r/c loco - a Gauge 1 Marklin Bavarian Pacific - with ready-installed equipment, and simply carried on the motion with all the successive buys.

As you know, the ‘big railway over in Nepean’ runs exclusively on your systems - 16 - 18 locos at the same time, with complete success, and I’m a big fan and user of the RCS system.

Terry,
I am not offended.

BTW. What ‘big railway over in Nepean’ are you talking about?

I’m glad we’re still friends - it’s pretty easy to make enemies long distance on the internet. The friar will tell you all about the ‘big railway in Nepean’, or you could just look up the Ottawa Valley Garden Railway Society.

PS - will you be at the Llanfair show again this year?

Unfortunately not this year Terry.
I postponed restoration work on my cars so I could go last year.
I really enjoy the Llanfair show so, as BIB right now perhaps I can save up enough pennies for a trip next year.

We have not seen the pics or video yet tac ?

Evenin', Dennis - the vids/pics have not yet bin did - I collect the loco from Trevor's track day on August 15. Many vids/pics will be did, I promise.

The loco has been at the other end of the country for all the work to be carried out by my good friend [yes, amazingly though it is, I DO actually have friends] Rod Blakeman - a real guru on steam matters…

Looking forward to the information as we are considering doing RC on the AC-11.

Loadsa luck there, Charles and Ryan. The last AC-11 I saw was only running on one engine.....persnally I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. A ready-made four foot long paper weight or door stop, IMO.

Anyways - here are a few pics and a couple of clips from Rod during and after the work - seems to be running like a mad thing now…pics 4 thru’ six might explain a certain reticence on the part of the loco to respond to larger throttle openings - the steam feed pipe had a severe flattening kink in it, restricting the passage of steam…all fixed now.

True, there have been quite a few “one legged” AC-11 running around. Ryan and I have developed fixes for them as per our post on MLS. The future of having a AC-11 requires a retrofit of the mechanical moving parts that will be our next phase of work. Still, there are others that like to RC engines and we are looking to map out such a solution.
Seems several problems of the Garrett mirrors the production QC on the Ac-11.

Charles - I've only ever seen two AC-11s running [at about $10k a pop here there aren't that many around], and the one-legged performance of one of them was pretty disappointing, I have to say.

Since I find the prototype as homely as a mud-fence I won’t be investing my $$ in one any time soon, but if you want any more piccies of the Carrott when it’s back in my paws, please let me know.

Best to you both
