Large Scale Central

"For Sale" Question

I have a few questions concerning selling on this site. First some background on me. I have been a member for a long time, primarily lurking and soaking up information. Most of my involvement was on the old Aristocraft Forum. Over the last decade or so I have acquired a ton of new Aristocraft Track, switches, locomotives, cars, Revolution Control Systems, etc. All my equipment is branded ATSF / Santa Fe. Just as I was all set to start my layout, I was beset with health issues. Between age (70), and back and heart issues, I realize that I don’t want to proceed with a layout. An elevated layout is not an option. I presently have spent $5-6,000 worth that I need to sell.

My questions are:

  1. What is the best way to sell my items?

  2. Is it possible to sell a huge collection on this site? Of course I would make a sizable donation to the site.

Thanks,

Bruce

You are more than welcome to post your items for sale here. My rules for selling items are more centered around a “Don’t try and run your business here without being an advertiser.” That said, I’m always welcome to donations to help offset the cost of running the site.

I would take some time and list out what you have and what you think you want to get for it. Single items usually will sell better than trying to sell off a whole collection in one transaction.

What is the best way to sell my items?

Interestingly, “Hinckley Bill” just posted the same question on MLS. (I suggested he post his items here, among other places.)

I wrote a long answer for him, which I will copy so you don’t have to visit “that” site:

So the question is what’s the best method of ‘letting go’ of all the items I have…lots of new track including multiple turnouts, an entire used twin circle layout I bought off a friend, multiple…

I don’t think there is a ‘best’ way. There’s an easy way: call Trainz or one of the other guys buying whole collections and let them take it off your hands. They’ll offer minimum $, but take away the hassles. There are also auctioneers, like Maurer, who will take it all away and auction it for you.

To maximize the value, if you have the time, then
a) make an inventory of everything, and, as you seem to be suggesting it is all more-or-less unused, try to remember what you paid for it.
(b) Take photos of each item, and the end of the box with the part number and description.
© set up a Paypal or Zelle account if you don’t have one.

You can advertise the whole collection with a price using the list, or sell individual items which will be quicker.
Advertise the items on this website (not much buy/sell activity here though,) on Largescalecentral.com, and especially on Facebook in the “G scale swap and shop group” which has 10,000 members and charges no fees. If you’re happy with eBay, you can place the items there and see what you get.

Be prepared to pack and get a shipping estimate. A local “Pak-n-Ship”, Fedex Office or UPS Store will provide boxes and estimates. I even bought from a guy who had low prices, but he took the items to UPS and had them packed properly and they called me to get a credit card number for shipping! Not cheap.

See you on Facebook

Pete / Bob,

Thanks for your valuable input / advice! It is vey helpful and much appreciated.
