Questions for Dave (TOC)-your layout?

I had first posted this in the Op’s, because that is where the photos and Videos were linked from…thought it was a bad fit, so here we go again…

Ok Dave, If you will…questions about your layout as prompted by Slide Show and Video…

Are the retaining wall stones dry stacked or mortared?

What type of wood is used for the retaining walls, looks like an “untreated tie”. I am aware that the Natl Forest Service uses this type of material locally, but have no idea where to look or what to call?

I have considered this for the wall I need to build-have you been satisfied with it?

Do you like the Stone or the Wood Better?

Your Biggest “I wish I hadn’t done that” in ref to your layout?

thanks
cale

All stone work dry-stacked, except for 2 specific locations.
One, in front of the tunnel at High Point, the rocks are concreted in, and insufficient depth to hold in a dry-stacked form.
The other is the approach to the upper track at the Concentrator.
I used a couple of 5-gallon buckets of mud.
Dirt in buckets left out, full of water, over several months of soaking turned into mud.
Stack and pour.
When it solidified, almost as good as concrete.

Old RR ties on most of the line, lower section has PT bridge timbers, cutoffs from the county bridge-building gang, I think.
Nailed together with deadmans installed.

Sometimes I wish I’d never built it at all.
Other times, it’s fun.

If I had known about Llagas and 215 when I started, it would all be 215 Llagas.

Bridge Timbers…now I know what to ask for!

thanks Dave
