Large Scale Central

Question regarding desert scenery.

Anyone know of a company that makes cacti in G scale? I know there is one company that does so in HO. Which is fine and all, but the cacti are too small and might look a bit funky next to these large scale engines and cars.

I suppose I could make my own, but hoping someone knows of a company.

Thanks

Why don’t you use real cacti. They are really low maintenance.

Not many real cacti are G scale ha ha!

Stacy if you want inspiration, look at Ray Dunakin’s work.

A bit pricey if you wanted many but here is one in a pot.

Ray has made some great cactus.
At least modeling them won’t stick in your finger like that cholla did to me yesterday!

I don’t know of any source for good looking, plastic cactus – or especially desert shrubs – in a suitable scale. I made all my stuff, mostly by modifying various plastic flowers or greenery from Michael’s. Unfortunately they stopped selling the one I used the most, but I keep hoping they’ll bring it back eventually, or something like it.

Here’s a link to how I made my plants. Some of the info is out of date, though. For instance, I now use floral wire instead of pipe cleaners, for the ocotillos:

Of course the kinds of cactus and shrubs you need will depend on the type of desert you are modeling.

You can make ok looking ocatillo from birch stems. I tie about six or eight with a rubber band, then dip the base into titebond III.

I’ve got a very nice sujaro cactus made from re-bar. It’s welded and then painted green. I only have one, but I could use about half a dozen more. Too bad the 13 year old girl grew up and stopped welding! I’d show a picture, but my freight shed is full!

These would be a good project for a 3D printing job!
