Question about a Titan installation?

I am gutting my Bachmann Connie and am adding a Titan and battery.

I was wondering if I really need to add a fan into the tender. I hadn’t planned on it, but the Titan instructions suggest it. I have room, but dont really know if it is necessary. Plus, I really dont want the subtile whine of the fan.

Next, I plan to take advantage of the stereo capabilities of the Titan. I plan to mount a small speaker in the boiler of the locomotive, along with a large speaker in the tender (standard way). What sounds have you guys routed to the front speaker?

I highly doubt you’re going to need the fan. I’ve got two installed; one in a Climax, one in a 45-ton diesel. Neither board gets remotely hot, and that’s driving two motors.

As for the sounds, I’ve played with the balance to make the whistles and bells sound like they’re coming from the appropriate places; fun to do, but from more than 10’ away, or heard from any direction other than broadside, you can’t really tell. It is a cool effect, mind you–and with the 2-8-0 having a beefy boiler, you can probably fit a decent-sized speaker in there and really give the forward speaker some presence. With my Climax, I’ve got a 2.5" speaker in the bunker, but only a 1.25" wafer speaker in the boiler. It sounds good, but because the wafer speaker’s sound lacks base, the chuff is evenly split between the bunker and boiler speaker. It sounds like the chuff is coming from the firebox. Not ideal, but it’s at least got some decent bass to it that way. And–again–you can’t tell unless you’re standing right next to it. My 45-tonner installation uses two 2" speakers placed at the end of either hood. Most sounds are split even between the two channels, but the bell and whistle are on oppposite ends of the loco, so the bell is panned (almost) to one end–“almost” because it’s still a touch behind the speaker, and the whistle is panned to the other end. All other sounds in on that loco are split even.

If there is no circulation in the tender, or you run in a hot environment, or run heavy loads it would be advisable.

You can run it and if you get overtemp then you can add the fan.

I was at a friends for over a week… Aristo SD45’s were no problem, but the completely sealed shell of a Dash 9 overheated an older QSI.

The newer ones (Titans) have even larger capacity output transistors on a separate board, but it can get warm inside a closed space.

There is an additional reason to split sounds between speakers, lower freqs in one and higher in the other, the term is intermodulation distortion…

It will improve the sound.

Thanks for the advice.

I dont have to worry about heat too much. I think I will try and see if I have an overheat problem before I install a fan (like Greg suggested).

You can buy 12 volt fans for about $10 also in that small size, but you might need a regulator IC…

Try the dual speakers, you will notice the additional clarity in the bell and whistle.

I think I’m going to try that Greg, thanks for the advice.
