We are thinking of spending the holidays in Canada, Quebec City to be precise. Is anyone familiar with the area ?
Fascinating city Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain. The walls around Old Quebec are the only fortified city walls remaining in the Americas north of Mexico, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1985 as the 'Historic District of Old Québec. Great place to try out your French!
We went to old Quebec City for our honeymoon. Very walkable and pretty, lots of museums, and other cool stuff to see. Make sure you go to Restaurant Aux Anciens Canadien and get their multiple game dinner. It was large medallions of various kinds of game (5 or 6 if memory serves). Tasty!
Yes, we went there in 2012, just before the Invasion, for a few days.
We stayed at a hotel in the center of downtown. We found it handy to leave the car parked and just walked around the city.
There are a few places we drove to, but we really enjoyed our stay there.
Color me envious.
There are somemany superb restaurants!
Where you dine depends upon your budget, or at least one splurge.
I had read somewhere that there was a restaurant that served local foie gras.
Poke around Yelp at the time.
We ended up eating lunch at http://saint-amour.com/en/ $$$$
My lunch appetizer looked something like this:
My pictures seem to have disappeared in my upgrade to Windows 10:-(
Bruce, thanks for posting some of your pics.
Interesting restaurant list: http://www.worldtravelguide.net/quebec-city/restaurants
Down river is the Isle D’Orleans
We stopped at the Ciderie Bilodeau as just one of those on the Isle.
The cider vinegar we brought home was superb. Have found nothing to compare since:-(
Bon Voyage
Cidrerie Bilodeau
If you DO go, remember to share your walking in both directions on both sides of the streets in the Old City. That way you’ll even out the cramps you get from walking around at 45 degrees to the horizontal.
As you can imagine, pushing an occupied wheelchair around was not a whole lot of fun, but we did it anyhow. Also, remember to ask for ‘moulines’ - a kind of king prawn, in the seafood restaurant, not ‘moulins’ - windmills. I almost choked on my soop.
If you go out of town, remember -
a. Not to remove the spoon from the coffee mug before drinking - that’s the sign that you was not brunged up propre bien.
b. General Wolfe.
c. The fact that Louis SOLD Lower Canada, as it was called back then, to the British.
Not for nothing is the provincial motto on the license plates ‘Je me souviens’ - ‘I remember’.
tac, the only Francophone in the whole family.
