Large Scale Central

Quarry Slab Wagons

These are 7/8n2 slate slab wagons based on those used at the Aberllefenni Quarry. My models are not a direct copy of the prototype but the overall dimensions are the same. One will go to recipient in the annual www.7-8ths.info swap car exchange (like secret santa). The wood frames were made from cedar. Detail parts are from Ozark or scratch from brass stock (like the brake lever/linkage). Wheels are 7/8s Sierra Valley for my swap car and modified LGB spoke wheels for my car (my switches don’t care for fine scale flanges). The slab wagons are used to transport large slate slabs from the quarry to a transfer point (like a main rail line). Slabs were stacked and then wedged in with small slates between the poles. The poles were removed and laid on the wagons when unloaded for transport back to the quarry. Pics -

VERY SUPER NICE!!!

That’s a really nice job Brian

Ain’t 7/8’ths a wonderful scale? Nicely done as usual.

Great build Brian. Nice subject.

Well done.

What did you use for the slabs?

What is the purpose of that curved pole?

Those looks great and different. I love that car swap SE7/8th does. It would be neat if we can do something like that here.

Thanks guys!

The slates are real slate cut down on the tile saw. The curved pole I think you are referring to is the brake lever (tough to get the underneath lit well). It would actually work if I had not glued the brake shoes in the open position. The brake shoes are Ozark so they can be bent in the closed position if you wanted.

Cool. I see it now, even in the small photos. Obviously I wasn’t looking closely enough.

Nice to have the tools for the real slate; and a supply!

Is the car very heavy?

That’s a great car Brian and being a rockhound I love the use of the slate!

The former owners of our place were in the masonry biz and left various piles of stone here and there. Much has been used in the layouts.

The car itself is pretty light but the slates make it very heavy. You couldn’t pull a long string of these but from the pics I have seen they would only pull a few cars at a time.

Very Cool…

Raising hand in back of classroom saying yo’ yo’ yo’ …I have a question…

Yes David

Why did you choose to model this particular prototype?

The person I got in the swap wanted a slate wagon which usually means one like this -

I stumbled upon these HO models and found them far more interesting -

The guys on the 7/8ths forum were happy to provide drawings and pics of the real thing to work from. -Brian

Holy Smokes that looks great. The brake and brake lever are really a nice touch.
