Was at a BORG yesterday in the irrigation department. Saw a pliers what was designed for capturing the sprinkler head to lift it out for service. Looks a lot like the spring retainer pliers mentioned.
The crabbing end is somewhat thinker and could be files down to a useable size. The crabber is part of the nose and not something added to the pliers.

I just searched for irrigation tools and saw Rainbird has a spray head puller for less than $10 and looks hefty enough to grind away on the insides of the jaws for rail clearance. A spring loaded handle makes less work hold them.
