Putting knuckle couplers on LGB Porter?

I just sat down to put a set of Bachmann knuckle couplers onto my LGB Porter and discovered it’s considerably different than the other rolling stock I’ve swapped couplers on. I’m sure I can figure out how to make it work, but before I go ahead with it I figured I’d ask if anyone else has done this and what suggestions you might have?

I replaced the rear coupler on a LGB Porter with a Bachmann Coupler and it was just a drop in. Can you explain why you are having a problem doing the conversion?

These are the areas of concern:

  1. No place to insert the springy “tail” which is used to keep the coupler centered.
  2. The coupler is loose. I need to either add a washer or use a shorter screw than the original.
  3. The coupler doesn’t extend very far, and since it’s body-mounted rather than truck mounted, I’m wondering if there will be enough clearance on tight curves.

Ray I converted my LGB Porter to Bmann knuckle, and it was an easy drop in, for the tail I used a brass strip bent into an L with a hole drilled in each leg, one for the mount screw and one for the tail spring. I have been using this for all my non-bmann cars that I want to convert to Bmann knuckles.

This is the first LS loco I ever got, going way back to '04. PS I run this engine A-OK on R1s, just mount the brass leg with the hole for the tail spring so that is back away from the coupler, not next to it. this gives the knuckle room to rotate thru tighter curves. As you do not use R1’s you should have no trouble.

Thanks Vic. BTW, I like that steer skull!
