Large Scale Central

PRR MP-54

Time to resurrect this thread.

Having so much time inside these days, I decided to do the MP RPO car.

Looking back through this build, I found posts from Pete Thorton about doing a Doodlebug build. I realized I just bought the parts I’m using from Pete. He had made a “Steam Powered Doodlebug”, took out Dora and sold the rest. Here I am recycling again.

This is the basis for the kitbash which needs to be shortened.

At least I don’t have to move seats, but I see the baggage door is too big, the car is too long, windows needed towards the end. #@%$! Here we go again.

Spent all afternoon figgerin’ and measurin’ to cut up the RPO.

Here’s the results, taped back together just to get an idea of what it will look like.

That’s enough for today.

But, the drawing shows 2 winders. Your “cut and paste” only has one.

One opening can become 2 windows, young grasshopper.

I had glued and clamped the sectioned car yesterday which didn’t like the glue I used. So today I glued and clamped with a plastic glue I used before. Then I put details on the eatery. Turned around to go upstairs and

WHAM!

Knocked everything on the floor, parts and clamps everywhere. When I went upstairs my wife said she heard me *@%$&!

Oh no!! Thanks, Forrest. Will let you know when I check tomorrow. Hopefully with pictures.

It didn’t look too bad until I looked closely. There are 3 sections. One joint was way off, so I broke the glue joint and started to trim and file.

The other section fell off!

So I started again with 3 pieces, carefully trimming to fit. Then I took it out to the shed on the Black & Decker Workmate with pipe clamps. There it is level, and I will go nowhere near it until tomorrow. Unless some chipmunk gets in there!

Come on Lou …it’s easy …just slap a few store bought detail parts on it here and there then call it done!

Okay, the situation has promise.

OK, so this just came to a screeching halt.

I had the floor of the car all figured out. I then realized I have to make a decision whether this is to be powered or not. I do have one more pantograph and the power unit from Thorton’s old Doodlebug. But I forgot that the powered truck has to be recessed.

This is important for anyone else tackling this.

So take out the flooring AGAIN and cut a hole for the power truck to be mounted in. I decided it was better to do this now than to have an “I shoulda”.

I remember reading somewhere that to fill a large gap, mix Superglue and Baking Soda. So I got a piece of cardboard, a toothpick, and superglue. Put a pile of baking soda, drop some glue and mix.

I got about 2 seconds of mixing and had a hard pile with a toothpick stuck in it.

Take 2: Put some baking soda into the gap and drop glue. Baking soda falls through gap.

Take 3: Put some superglue in the gap and sprinkle with baking soda. This works the best, but the mass is so hard that I need to use a file to smooth it out. I don’t think this will come apart at this seam.

Heading downstairs to file and sand as it is raining AGAIN.

Yea it works great and if you can get some dental prophy jet powder used in dental preferably the unflavored kind it is backing soda that is very fine grain and fills better, you can but iy on eBay or con your dentist into giving you some, Bill

Cigar or cigarette ash work quite well as a CA filler especially when hot …just saying Lou

Gave up smoking, gave up drinking, gave up chasing women, what’s left?

Personally, I only gave up smoking, but I still ended up back with my trains. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

For ye who thinketh I do naught:

Painting the spliced roof of the MU RPO-Baggage Car.

Painted body and roof this weekend.

Now all I need to do is finish windows, grab irons and steps, pantograph, inside walls, engineer enclosure and seat, decals, and figure out how to wire the power block. I may need help with the last item.

and figure out how to wire the power block. I may need help with the last item

If you send it back I’ll try and fix it. I still feel guilty for not checking it before you got it!

It works if I apply power to one of the 2 connectors. I just can’t figure out where the 2 connectors connect to and how I get track power to turn the wheels.

But I still appreciate any help, moral or otherwise.
