PRR 490797 – Double Ended Tunnel Crane

So, Pete, where is this thread that purports that the magic carpet is obsolete?

Steve,

The latest NSWL catalog on drives specifically states that the ‘Magic Carpet’ drive is for “0” Scale only.

See: http://www.nwsl.com/uploads/chap2_web_01-2014.pdf

That doesn’t answer the question that I posed to Pete though, does it? No flame, just curious. WWhy does Pete say that the Magic Carpet is obsolete?

Obsolete has several definitions…

One is no longer produced… definitely true.

Another is out of date, old fashioned… would submit not true.

So depending on the definition you want…

Greg

No matter which definition you choose, ‘G’ Scale magic carpet drives are NLA. Arethe semantics that important?

I suppose not, but now I am curious about all this blow back on a question that I directed at Pete.

Steve

I started this thread to discuss the PRR490797 crane prototype and the model I created. I have spent 6 months researching, designing and building the model. I am enjoying the discussion about it.

If you have nothing to contribute directly to that discussion, kindly STAY OFF THE THREAD.

I was doing some reading and I noticed it said “battery” not batteries and also charging jacks if they were close enough to reach cables …however that must have been one big battery. From what “I gathered” in the reading the battery/batteries would have been carried on board. I also understand the speculation part! Perhaps someday you could venture up to the Danbury CT museum and take a look at a real one and it may or may not answer some speculation. Don’t know if you saw this or not http://sbiii.com/bigcran1.html#prrhookr if not you always find these extra pictures when the model is finished.

Thanks Rooster

Yes I am familiar with that site. I correspond and spoke at great length with the site owner, Sam Berliner, about the crane. The NYC version in Danbury is a bit different than the PRR version in a number of ways. The pictures of it did help me understand how the booms might have worked. Going for a visit is on my list.

About the batteries, The NYC version had its battery banks in the ceiling of the car. reference letter “ex-Metro-North 001” on this page http://members.trainweb.com/bedt/indloco/amtk16000.html#Self under “sorting out which is which”. The carline of the PRR does not seem to have the height that the NYC version did.
