protocoling a mountain

oh yeah… still sometimes doing something…

so the idea is to make a rocky landscape between the baseblocks for that trestle.

as i am not fully satisfied with my usual method (chickenwire, paper and acryl-plaster), i tried something else.

tackered some windowscreen to the boards:

then i smeared the crack-filler on the wirescreen.

that was a really bad idea. about 80% of the material ended up below the screening, not upon it.

and after it dried, i had a lot of cracks in the crack-filler.

so, something else begged to be done.

while i thought about other possibilities, to build up a broken landscape, my eyes fell upon a bucket full with sawdust.

so off i went.

some crackfiller, some sawdust and some white glue got mixed and applied to two new sections of screening and to one of the crack-filler covered sections (the one on the left.)

that seems to work better.

the stuff stays on the upper side of the windowscreen, dries out rock-hard and even has the advantage, not to be white.

(less colour needed, and in case of a flake off of colour, not so obvious)

now back to the armchair, to get an idea, with what i can make a basic rock landscape, to apply the new mix upon.

Korm,

Is there a reason you have avoided carved foam covered and plaster? Just wondering. I have used both the wire/paper/[plaster method and the carved foam and plaster method and I have to say I like the foam better.

You such great work I hesitate to even make a suggestion because your skill is top notch. But I have to ask.

yes, there is a reason.

better said two of them. the baby-blue or pink foam seems not to exist in my country, and the stuff in the spray cans is veery expensive.

i do use the bubbly stuff, styrofoam, but the bubbles have a diameter of about a third of an inch. sometimes i can lay my greedy hands on packagematerials from music equipment or washing mashines - but that i reserve for buildings.

A very practical answer. One problem I have is not even considering what is common place here may not be elsewhere. Never even crossed my mind that the pink and blue foam wouldn’t be readily available. And I hate the bubbly stuff, Id rather work with mesh paper and plaster. So proceed you have it covered (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Another good thread with the needed pics back on the docket

Beautiful work korm.

…and I only discovered your update today. That was a great 10 year read this morning.

With the downturn in all hobbies, learning new and established modelling techniques can be quite difficult. Now that I’m actually building a garden railway, joined a club (half a continent away), with no locals placing trains in the garden, I started having trouble finding answers to questions that popped up as I progressed. If I couldn’t find something in a book, magazine or garden railway convention I might ask a forum.

I think that perhaps for people who have been years on a forum, built their railway, staying in touch with friends they’ve made, keeping up to date and answering occasional questions for the random person who drops in may be enough.

I was quite surprised to be welcomed in, and encouraged to ask further questions, and to be asked questions. Most surprisingly, is the amount of ownership members have in this forum and the willingness to update and preserve an old post.

There is nothing as frustrating as finding a post with great comments but missing pictures. Broken threads, and missing pictures have been the number one reason for me not sticking around a forum. But when I see a repaired post, I enjoy the read and really appreciate the time and effort in making it available again.

So Korm and everyone who have taken on reviving their old posts, a big thanks for updating and making your old posts available for us new LargeScale Centralians.

thinking (you know, that painfull, resultless activity), i ask myself, if it shouldn’t be called:
LargeScale DEcentralians ?
but on the other hand, the initials then would have to be changed too from LSC to LS…
and that, again, might be a touch too old fashioned. Lucy must be a very old lady by now.
