Precision Scale "G Scale" tank cars?

I’m wondering if anyone here has or have seen a Precision Scale G scale tank car. They are 1/24 scale, I think.

Does anyone have dimensions on these cars?

I’m currently using the Bachmann Big Haulers tank cars. Nice, but not exactly prototypical. I thought about converting our Bachmann tank cars to frameless tank cars, but I just can’t figure out a way to do it. Also the Bachmann tank top filler would require lots of body work to get it to look right.

So I’m wondering if the Precision Scale tanks might work on our 1:22.5 scale layout. Could be pricey though as they are bras models. And likely hard to find them anymore. I’d probably want the model painted in “Gramps” lettering.

Have you tried removing the flat car, setting it aside for further bashing, then drilling and tapping a 2-56 hole bottom dead center about an inch and a half in from the ends of the tank for the trucks? If memory serves, there is a seam there that you can use as a guide. I’ve seen that done and it looks pretty good. It should scale out close to 1:24.

I think I have seen one. Jim has a whole bunch of 1/24th brass stuff which he ran at RGSEast one year. Want me to ask him for inof?

Sure, any info is appreciated.

Here are two on da bay. Kinda spendy, though, for my taste.

Buy it now for $400.00.

If it was me, I’d take another look at bashing the Bachmanns. :stuck_out_tongue:

They are nice looking, though.

Ouch :open_mouth:

The PSC ones are very nice, though yes 1:24. They are scale so if you need the size just take the real length/width and divide. You would be better off buying the Bachmann ones. Plus they are much cheaper and lettered for Gramps. Also the PSC cars usually go for 275-350@ realistically

Thanks for the info. I have Bachmann tanks currently. The Big Hauler style, not the new 1:20.3 Bachmann tanks. Just looking around at what else is out there that might be more prototypical. Bashing my Bachmann tanks will be the cheapest option. But not the quickest

Were you around when Bart up-scaled a Bachman tank for me?

I was attempting a build of an early version of EBT’s Tank-on-Flat. The project is still in limbo. Build thread here. Somewhere there is a thread by Bart that explained teh dis-assembly of the tank. You wouldn’t need to lengthen it for your scale, but I recall that the bottom of the tank is not continuous.

You need to fab up bolsters. Unless you stack washers. That would look good--Not!

Yes, new bolsters would have to be made. I’m wondering if a cut in half PVC pipe would work as a tank cradle. Just have to find the right size pipe to match the curve of the Bachmann tank. For those unfamiliar with the frameless narrow gauge “Gramps” tank cars, here is a great Sn3 model by PBL:

Matt,

Look on eBay for Three-Foot Gauge frameless tankcars. They are 1:20.3 scale and very well detailed and come complete with proper trucks; have tapered wheel axels and ball bearings.
These cars were produced about 4-5 years ago, so only second hand cars are available. They were produced as data only and GRAMPS.

Matt,

Bachmann has an unlettered in primer red version 1:20.3 frameless Gramps available, P/N 88499. Decal set for Gramps car is also available from CDS which was purchased by Ozark Minatures.

Caboose Hobbies in Denver has the tank car in stock for $100.00.

Caboose Hobbies has 2 new PSC 1:24 brass UTLX tank cars on their brass consignment list. Check them out-they’re like new.

I have bot the framed and framless version of the bmann 1:20 cars on the roster and a couple of the 1:22.5 cars to convert…the cars have the right diameter, but arent quite long enough, while I like the look of the frameless cars, i think the framed version would be a lot simpler to build cause the frame. Hides a lot of details that would have to be added (and prolly broken off over time) other wise…

I work at Caboose Hobbies in Denver, and we just received 2 like new PSC 1:24 size brass UTLX tank cars in on consigmnent. I believe the price is $150.00 each. They are beautiful. Give us a call if you are interested.
