I have the pre-1:20 model Bachmann 0-4-0 and it looks like a midget pulling the USA or LGB 1890’s style passenger cars. Is the “newer” 1:20 scale Bachmann 0-4-0 considerably larger? I would appreciate any comparative photos with freight or passenger cars or compared to one of the common locos.

I can’t answer the specific question about the B’mann 0-4-0, but you should take a look at some pictures of the Eureka (a 4-4-0) pulling some passenger cars or a caboose. See:

I couldn’t locate them this evening, but there are other pictures of the Eureka pulling a pair of passenger cars that totally dwarf it.
The Eureka is significantly larger than the prototype of the B’mann 0-4-0, yet the passenger cars still appear much larger than the engine. This is one the things many people do not appreciate about railroading. The acceptance or choice of significantly out of scale motive power and rolling stock models is frequently based on the (incorrect) idea that everything should be the same size and (especially) height. That’s not so in the real world!
The B’mann 0-4-0 is a relatively tiny switch engine and in the 1:1 world it would definitely appear to be very small compared to other rolling stock.

The “newer” 1:20 porter is larger than the original one, but it’s still pretty darned small. I thought I had photos of it outside with some freight cars, but I do not. In terms of size, it’s about even with the Bachmann or Accucraft steel hopper. There’s a reason locos of this size were called “Dinky.”

personally I preferred the older model, it had better suspension and would track a lot better that the newer version

I won’t buy a new one just to gain an increase in size – the new one doesn’t appear to be much larger per Kevin’s photo (above) showing both the 0-4-0 and a passenger car.
