Power Outage!

I just talked with Bob and he indicated that they are experiencing a big ice storm and he has lost power.

He is being told that power could be out for 60 hours or more. Brrr.

While the forums will continue, the freight sheds will not be available until power is restored.

Yikes. That’s why we have a generator.

Bruce,

Why does the forum still work, then? Does Bob have a back-up generator, or is the server off-site?

Warm wishes to Bob.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

The server for the forum is off-site. The other stuff in managed at home. We’ll see how long THAT lasts, now.

Ah.
I had e-mailed him about the Freight Shed being DOA, now I see why.

Thank you for passing on the info.

Power just came back on, and we’re up and running again.

And, yea, looking into off-site hosting for the freight shed. We’ll see how that goes.

At least it wasn’t 60 hours!

Welcome back. I don’t think we threw too many peanuts on the floor…

Hey Bob -

I’ve been pretty happy with 1&1 (1and1.com) They are dirt cheap and offer a lot of space. Their Linux servers are faster than their Windows servers. My stuff is on Windows and I did have some issues, but after several weeks of denying a problem existed, they finally admitted it, fixed it and refunded me a months fees. The refund was unsolicited.

You can speed test lsc.cvsry.com or photo.cvsry.com - both are raw lists of photos hosted at 1&1.

I’ve got plenty of speed and space where LSC is hosted, but the freight shed server is located in-house here, and moving it may/will be a nightmare. Its all a configuration nightmare of grown code over the last few years. Ill end up doing it the same way Ive moved everything else from poor-to-better, build a duplicate in-place in the new area, test the hell out of it, and then copy/move the user data over a couple hours.

Bob,

Did you guys survive the power outage unscathed? Those things always bring out the best and the worst.

Yea, no real issues here. Couldn’t get out of the neighborhood for most of yesterday, but they have one end open up now. The other end has at least 2 poles across the road. There are trees and branches down everywhere. Some people in town won’t have power back until Tuesday or Wednesday.

And I still don’t have any snow…

My son Matthew is working on a solution for that... a home brew snow gun powered by a pressure washer and a compressor.

Please ask Matt to bring it to Fred’s next July.

Hmmm… Unless you know a way to cool Fred’s back yard down to -3C, I’m afraid it wouldn’t work. I guess we’ll just have to depend on Rumskis and Ice

 Works for me.

You will probably get lots of snow ..the good plowable type....The day you start your new job and can't come home to play! That's the way it always goes...

The Invasion can’t come too soon…
