Power and control compatibility

My railway is powered by a MRC trainpower 6200. I have just gotten a Crest Train Engineer CRE-55470 and want to know if I can team up the train engineer with the MRC transformer or do I need to get a fixed outout power supply?? The Crest TE is calling for 12-24V DC filtered power source for the receiver. The MRC Transformer output spec is 0 to 18.5V DC 35VA MAX. No mention of filtered power.

A litte help here please??

The 55470 27 mhz receiver likes pure DC, not a pulsed input. (momentum on)

Also the input is polarized and should never be over 24 volts.

I would get a 24 volt regulated supply at 10 amps as this unit with a fan can control up to 10 amps to the track.

thanks for the help, Merry Christmas!!

Hi Paul

I use a Aristo TE 5471 with the optional fan attached to it and my power pack is a Crest 55465 switchable pack. Set to “G” it gives 23 volts at 12 amp. This is strong enough to allow me to run 3 USAT or 3 Bachmann engines at the same time. I remember when I bought this setup it was recommended to get that fan to help keep the TE cool when operated with over 10 amps.

A quick search on Ebay turned up this one but I’m not sure if it is the best for your application.

Dan is a electronics wiz so take his advice.

Thanks Todd, did you get the Crest 55465 locally??

The ultima is not a regulated supply, unit does have a good sized filter capacitor.

Problem with this supply is the more power you draw from it, the lower the output voltage which was fine for the older engines that had motors tied directly to track power.

So, at no load the output is approx 21 volts, but at 5 amps or more the power drops and at full load down to 16 volts.

I go to MPJA.com and get the regulated supplies, and I have found these at great prices.

Look carefully and you will see units that are being resold on the BAY for triple what MPJA sells them.
