Posting videos on YT

OK, gentlemen, a serious question for which I’d like a serious answer. I bust my gut trying to esnure the highest quality of image acquisition when I make a video using my Sony camera - the DSC-HX9V. In spite of that and no matter how good it looks on my screen here, or on my TV, by the time it gets on YT it’s mostly crappy, or fails completely to upload when I select HD as my choice of resolution.

Why is that?

I’m fed up of looking at other folks’ great videos taken at what seem at first glance to be lower resolution setting than mine - the difference between THEIR 380 and MY 380 is as different as it is possible to be.

Reason is, me and Joe are going to cab-ride the Sumpter Valley RR in June, and for both of us it’s a one-time event, and I’d sure hate to waste my efforts making a crappy memory jolter.

Like I said, this needs a serious response, not a ‘ha-ha’-style Homer Simpson remark.

TIA.

Not an answer, but how is the upload bandwidth from your shack in the woods? If you don’t know try speedtest.net

tac,

At the bottom right on the video, there’s a symbol that looks like a gear. If you click on that it gives you different resolution values. It may be set at the lowest. That’s how mine usually works.

Ken, no matter what I do, it never goes any higher than 380 on my Vids, even when they are in HD - AAMOF - I have nothing to upload that ISN’T HD. Still comes out like shite taken through the bottom of a Cc-Cl bottle…

Hmmm strange tac. I use a coolpix camera. When I take video I set the camera at the highest resolution it will go. I think its set in a TV viewing mode or something like that (ill double check) Then just upload to youtube. I dont pic a resolution while uploading to youtube. Just whatever the preset setting is I guess.

Also when you make videos do you use a program like windows movie maker or something like it? I wonder if that makes a difference.

Worst case tac send me your video clips and I will put something together for you.

Hi, Shawn - when I load onto youtube a little box appears that reads - 640x480 - and asks me if I want to convert? When I click the box, there is nothing to convert to.

Don’t use any other programme, me.

tac, ig, ken the GFT & The Cecil B DeMille boys

tac I dont get that box at all. I go into youtube and select upload in top right corner. Then a larger upload buttons appears in red with an arrow. I click that and it brings me to my files. I click the file i want and it starts its upload. Never asking for settings. Also try going into your settings. Click where your username is (top right screen) bring up the drop down menue and click on settings. On top left side you have account settings. Click on playback. Try the choices in their. If no luck

Try uploading to this site and see if its better.

On VIMEO you can set your video to be displayed at 1080p to one and all.

However when you upload it is converted to 720p to make it accessible/playable for those who have slow computers/slow connections and/or watch on a portable device.

The one reason I also have a YouTube account - in addition to my PLUS account at VIMEO - is to compare the quality and the time lag on Google to show up almost identical videos. Experience makes me add an extra copyright notice on the copies I upload at YT.

I guess that living in Buttsville we get the cranky version of YouTube - my controls bear no resemblance to yours, Shawn.

H-J - thanks for that - I’ve always been an admirifier of your great vids. Seems I might have to be giving Vimeo a try and see how it goes.

Thanks, all.
